Black Beauty is an 1877 novel by English author Anna Sewell. It was composed in the last years of her life, during which she remained in her house as an invalid. The novel became an immediate best-seller, with Sewell dying just five months after its publication, but having lived long enough to see her only novel become a success. With fifty million copies sold, Black Beauty is one of the best-selling books of all time. A horse is a horse of course unless of course the horse is Black Beauty. Animal-loving children have been devoted to Black Beauty throughout this century, and no doubt will continue through the next. Although Anna Sewell's classic paints a clear picture of turn-of-the-century London, its message is universal and timeless: animals will serve humans well if they are treated with consideration and kindness. Black Beauty tells the story of the horse's own long and varied life, from a well-born colt in a pleasant meadow to an elegant carriage horse for a gentleman to a painfully overworked cab horse. Throughout, Sewell rails - in a gentle, 19th-century way - against animal maltreatment. Young readers will follow Black Beauty's fortunes, good and bad, with gentle masters as well as cruel. Children can easily make the leap from horse-human relationships to human-human relationships, and begin to understand how their own consideration of others may be a benefit to all.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, March 21, 2014)
This book is about a horse named Black Beauty and the time he spent with his mother and what she taught him. He is then sold to Squire Gordon who loves animals and is known for treating them very well. He enjoys time there but later is sold to Earlshall Park where life is painful. Black Beauty gets hurt and keeps on being sold from this point on and keeps being treated badly. At the end he is sold one last time and reconnects to a former trainer who makes sure he lives out the rest of his day in peace. Sewell sold the novel to local publisher Jarrolds on 24 November 1877, when she was 57 years of age. Although it is now considered a children's classic, she originally wrote it for those who worked with horses. She said "a special aim was to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses".

Audio CD (Blackstone Audio, Inc., Dec. 1, 2011)
[This is the Audiobook CD Library Edition in vinyl case.] From its first publication in 1877, Black Beauty has been one of the best-loved animal stories ever written. The dramatic and heartwarming tale is told by the magnificent black horse himself, from his idyllic days on a country squire's estate to his harsh fate as a London cab horse and his merciful rescue by two kindly old ladies. Filled with vivid anecdotes about animal intelligence, the novel derives a special magic from the love of all creatures, great and small, apparent on every page. But the book's lasting impact comes from its descriptions of a human society struggling to find the goodness within itself and its plea for kindness to all creatures -- a message so powerful that this favorite classic began a crusade for animal welfare that continues to this day.
