  • Between the Acts

    Virginia Woolf

Paperback (Independently published, Dec. 10, 2019)
The author’s last novel, written during the early years of World War II, was completed just before her death. The action takes place on a single summer’s day at a country house, Pointz Hall, in the heart of England. In the garden the villagers are presenting their annual pageant - on this occasion scenes from English history up to and including ‘ourselves,’ the audience, in June 1939. During the interludes the inhabitants of Pointz Hall, the Olivers, their guests, and the villagers have tea, stroll, and talk. There is an intense interplay among the unhappy Isa Oliver, her handsome husband, Giles, whom she loves and hates, and a guest, Mrs. Manresa, who is pursuing him. A storm interrupts the final tableau, and the pageant comes to an end. The performers and the audience depart to resume their ordinary lives and Isa and Giles to confront each other.
  • Between The Acts

    Virginia Woolf

Paperback (Seaburn World Classics, July 5, 2015)
The novel takes place in a country house in England, just before the Second World War. It is the day when the annual pageant is to be performed in the grounds of the house. The pageant is traditionally a celebration of English history, and is attended by the entire local community. The owner of the house is Bartholomew Oliver, a widower and retired Indian Army officer. His sister Lucy, who is also living in the house, is slightly eccentric but harmless. Bartholomew has a son, Giles, who has a job in the city and is restless and frustrated. His wife, Isa, is staying at the house with her two children and has lost interest in Giles. She is attracted to a local gentleman farmer, Haines, although the relationship goes no further than eye contact.
  • The In-Between

    Jaime Lang

    (, Feb. 12, 2019)
The world is full of pain. We all know that. This is the story about my battle but I didn't write it as a way to complain and feel sorry for myself. I don't want you to get that impression. I wrote it because growing up I didn't know anyone else who experienced the things I did. I didn't have the words to describe what was happening to me or how conflicted I was feeling. It took decades to gather a vocabulary that could make some kind of sense out of it and I was only able to do that by finding other people and stories and experiences that I could relate to and borrow from. This book is in third person because it was too hard to write in first person, but it was written with the hope that it might help someone else find the words that they might not yet have to describe their experience. Maybe you don't have schizophrenia. Maybe you aren't gay or struggling with religion or identity, but I think we all struggle at some time with figuring out who we are and what are place in the world is. My struggle happened to be an unusual one because it needed to be so that I could face it. Yours might not be so completely unsettling and that's good, but maybe you do have that part that also wonders about what is right and wrong? And real and unreal? Maybe sometimes you look at your daily life and wonder if there is any meaning to it? Or maybe you don't. I did. For a long time I fought myself to try to be what I never was. I drew courage from stories of people who also had battles to fight. So, if this helps someone else to confront that inner element of fear-- the fear of not being who you want to be or who you thought you were, then it's worth it.

eBook (Christian Faith Publishing, Inc., Sept. 25, 2017)
We all have a beginning. We all have an end. It’s what we do in the in-between that seals our eternal existence. John wrote, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Rev 22:13, NIV). “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty” (Rev 1:8, NIV). In our in-between, children, honor your mother and father. Parents, raise your children by the word of God. Live a quiet life, love one another, help those in need. “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40, NIV). The in-between, the children we are blessed with are precious to us, only second to God. The in-between, the span in the middle of our lives connecting beginning to end, the name in the middle connecting the first and last, may our lives be rich with everything God has for us. We all have a choice, the free will to choose Jesus and eternal life, or to not choose Jesus and not eternal life. “Jesus is the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). It’s faith alone in Christ alone that saves. Admit your sinful nature, believe Jesus is the Son of God, and confess your faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior. Grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.
