Paperback (Nook Press, Aug. 7, 2016)
The Author writes: "TO THE CHILDREN Dear Little Friends: I want to introduce the farmyard people to you, and to have you call upon them and become better acquainted as soon as you can. Some of them are working for us, and we surely should know them. Perhaps, too, some of us are working for them, since that is the way in this delightful world of ours, and one of the happiest parts of life is helping and being helped. It is so in the farmyard, and although there is not much work that the people there can do for each other, there are many kind things to be said, and even the Lame Duckling found that he could make the Blind Horse happy when he tried. It is there as it is everywhere else, and I sometimes think that although the farmyard people do not look like us or talk like us, they are not so very different after all. If you had seen the little Chicken who wouldn't eat gravel when his mother was reproving him, you could not have helped knowing his thoughts even if you did not understand a word of the Chicken language. He was thinking, "I don't care! I don't care a bit! So now!" That was long since, for he was a Chicken when I was a little girl, and both of us grew up some time ago. I think I have always been more sorry for him because when he was learning to eat gravel I was learning to eat some things which I did not like; and so, you see, I knew exactly how he felt. But it was not until afterwards that I found out how his mother felt.

  • Among the Farmyard People

    Clara Dillingham Pierson (1868 - 1952)

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, Jan. 1, 2016)
Known as an American author of children's books containing charming animal and nature stories written for kids over 5 years old, Clara D. Pierson was a kindergarten teacher who lived between 1868-1952.“Among the Farmyard People” is a collection of 18 entertaining and educational tales that introduce children to farm animals. Although the animals possess the ability to speak, they are presented scientifically accurate and the stories are overall very realistic. The author uses an advanced vocabulary but perfectly adequate for her young readers; no worries about the need of rewording, redirecting or glossing over. The book begins with a preamble to the children in which the author explains that animals are feeling beings and even if they do not look like humans, they are not so different after all. This is a great way to start, as nurturing children's love for animals and gentle behavior towards them is extremely important from many points of views. Pierson explains with simple words that animals should not be valued for what they can provide (food, wool etc.) or for the way they serve humans as companions and working force; children are taught to value animals simply because they are living creatures that have the same basic needs as we do. In other words, the author pleads for understanding the intrinsic value of an animal. As the book progresses, we discover the extraordinary stories of the lamb with the longest tail, the fussy queen bee, the foolish little mouse, the lonely little pig, the bragging peacock, running-away sheep, the twin lambs, the kitten who lost herself, the discontented guinea hen, the young rat facing the trap and many more creatures – each with its own charming story. All the tales close with a gentle moral that encourages children to behave better. The moral is not preachy, but subtle and truly meaningful.

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, March 1, 2016)
About the Book Older social history, that is, before 1960, included topics that did not fit into the mainstream historiography of political, military, diplomatic and constitutional history. Without a central theme, it often discussed political movements, like Populism, that were considered "social". The concept of "people's history" was often so Marxist that non-Marxists would not read it. Social history was set apart from political history, intellectual history and the history of great personages. The English historian G. M. Trevelyan saw it as a link between economic and political history. Also in this Book Biographies and auto-biographies that should be classed as part of a nation or a society’s cultural heritage are hard to define. Cultural heritage is often seen as the legacy of intangible attributes of a group or society that are inherited from past generations. Cultural heritage includes tangible culture such as books, works of art, and artifacts, and intangible culture, such as folklore, traditions, language, and knowledge. The people who have contributed to those cultural attributes are relevant here. And in this Book These are titles about women who have been prominent in any field of endeavour, including education, literature, the arts, music, politics, medicine, science and technology. This also includes women who have been prominent in history, in women’s organizations, and part of the movement for women’s suffrage.About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades.
