While we are blessed in today's game to observe the remarkable play of point guards such as Stephen Curry and Chris Paul, Pistol Pete was one of the first point guards to display many of the key ball-handling skills that we observe on a nightly basis in the game today.A legend in his own right, his story is one persistence and hard work in order to achieve great things. When you learn Pete Maravich's story, it comes as no surprise why he was one of the youngest players to ever be inducted into the Hall of Fame. In 1996, he was named one of the fifty greatest players in NBA history due to his remarkable creativity on the court. In this book, we'll learn his story. Here is a preview of what is inside this book:Childhood and Early LifeHigh School CareerCollege Career and NCAA LegacyMaravich's NBA CareerGetting DraftedRookie SeasonBack-to-Back All-Star SeasonsTrade to the New Orleans JazzScoring Champion SeasonKnee Injuries and Final All-Star SeasonRelocation to Utah, Getting WaivedJoining the Boston Celtics, The Final StretchRetirementLife After BasketballPete Maravich's Personal LifeLegacy, Influence, and Contribution to the Game of BasketballAn excerpt from the book:The NBA game today has become a spectacle filled with players with the flashy style and theatrics that wow millions of fans worldwide. Plays such as the behind-the-back dribble, the no-look pass, the between-the-legs dribble, and many other flashy moves are all crowd favorites. But basketball fans today forget the fact that there was one player who exclusively made the stylish brand of basketball his trademark on the court. That basketball legend went by the name of Pete Maravich, better known as “Pistol Pete” because of his penchant for shooting the basketball from the side like an old Western cowboy would shoot his revolver from the side. We’ve all seen so many players do the flashiest of moves on the court that it’s not a novelty in the NBA anymore. No-look passes have been the trademark moves of Magic Johnson, Steve Nash, and Chris Paul. They did it at such a high level that they were among the best point guards or their generations. Furthermore, the behind-the-back pass is such a staple for Stephen Curry and Ricky Rubio that they do it at least once or twice a game. While those kinds of plays are always a joy to see, they are no longer a rare spectacle in the NBA. But in Pete Maravich’s days, he was the only guy who performed these flashy moves on the court. Pistol Pete became a crowd favorite and people flocked night in and night out to see his moves. He was probably the first basketball great to ‘bring the playground and freewheeling moves to the NBA and he was a pioneer of today’s brand of basketball. Plus, he always played with great flowing hair that became his trademark do on the floor.Tags: pete maravich bio, pete maravich basketball, oscar robertson, jerry west, larry bird, wilt chamberlain, julius erving, dr. j, john stockton, jason williams, stephen curry, steve nash, chris paul

The bigger and taller the player is, the bigger his position was. Players 6'9" or taller would usually play the power forward and center positions. And naturally, smaller players usually play either guard positions. This has been the case since basketball was first invented. Those who are taller have the natural advantage near the basket while those who are shorter are usually quicker and more mobile than other players. However, over the last handful of decades, the NBA has seen its share of generational talents that play entirely different styles than what people would expect based on their size. You see players that look like they play the forward positions playing guard. And there are those that are listed as wing players who act more like playmakers whenever they are on the floor. Considered as "big guards," these players may look like your conventional forwards or wings but have the skill set of point guards. They run like guards, handle the ball like playmakers, and run plays for the entire team like they are six feet tall. Using their superior size, such players have become matchup nightmares in the NBA. Considered the very first big guard, Oscar Robertson had the size of a wing player back in the ‘60s and early ‘70s but played more like a point guard. Using his size, he could bully his way to the basket, score over the top of the defense, rebound at a high rate, and make plays for his teammates. That is why Oscar Robertson was the first and only player in more than five decades to average a triple-double.During the ‘80s, we saw the arrival of Earvin "Magic" Johnson. At almost 6'9", he was basically as big as a power forward but had the skills of an all-time great point guard. Because he was basically a head taller than all of his matchups but just as mobile as any other point guard, it was easy for him to see over the top of the defense and get from one point to another to make plays at a high rate for his teammates.Tags: Ben Simmons biography, Philadelphia 76ers basketball, Ben Simmons book, books for basketball fans, Joel Embiid
  • Jason Kidd: The Inspiring Story of One of Basketball's Greatest Point Guards

    Clayton Geoffreys

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, June 21, 2016)
Learn the Inspiring Story of the Legendary Point Guard Jason Kidd!Read on your PC, Mac, smartphone, tablet or Kindle device! In Jason Kidd: The Inspiring Story of One of Basketball's Greatest Point Guards, you will learn the inspirational story of one of basketball's premier point guards, Jason Kidd. Jason Kidd was easily one of the best point guards to play the game of basketball throughout the 2000s. With an extraordinary ability to pass the ball at precisely the right time, Kidd was like Steve Nash in that he made the teammates around him fundamentally better.Being an NBA Champion (with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011), ten-time All-Star and five-time All-NBA First Team member, Jason Kidd's passing and rebounding abilities made him feared by opponents. He corralled triple-doubles years before flashy athletic point guards like Russell Westbrook began doing so. Read on to learn Kidd’s inspiring story. Here is a preview of what is inside this book: Childhood and Early LifeHigh School CareerCollege CareerJason Kidd's NBA CareerGetting DraftedRookie CampaignFirst All-Star SeasonTensions in Dallas, the Trade to Phoenix, Fresh Start with the Suns, First Playoff AppearanceFirst Full Season with Phoenix, Igniting the Scorching SunsShortened Season, Another First Round ExitBreaking Through to the Second RoundFinal Season in PhoenixThe Trade to New Jersey, Reaching the NBA FinalsSecond Consecutive Finals AppearanceTeaming Up with Vince CarterLeading a Trio with Carter and JeffersonFinal Stretch in New Jersey, the Return to DallasContending as a MavFirst and Only NBA ChampionshipFinal Season with DallasStop at the Big Apple, and RetirementCoaching CareerUSA National Basketball Team CareerPersonal LifeImpact, Legacy, and FutureAn excerpt from the book:As far as ranking the top point guards in the history of the NBA is concerned, no list would be truly complete without Jason Kidd somewhere on top of all of the other playmakers the league has seen. Why not? He is an NBA champion, a 10-time All-Star, a six-time All-NBA Team member, a nine-time All-Defensive Team selection, a two-time Olympic Gold medalist, and a five-time assist leader. On paper alone you would see how valuable of a point guard Kidd was in his 19-year NBA stint. However, there were also times when he was not truly befitting of being called a historically elite point guard because of all the criticisms and shortcomings he has had as a player. He came into the league with virtually no jump shot and a very minimal offensive repertoire. He has had struggles with coaches and even, for a while, lacked the work ethic needed to be elite. And, for most of his career, he was never the leader of a championship team. But, for all those criticisms and downsides to his game, Jason Kidd was always a leader that made his other teammates great by doing everything else on the court. He always made it a point to find teammates because scoring the ball himself was never really his top priority. His ability to rebound the ball at a high level for a point guard made sure he could trigger fast-break opportunities at a quick rate. And his ability to defend every guard position earned him the reputation of being an elite defender in his prime. Kidd’s vast array of skills made him a ray of sunshine to a franchise because he always lifted his teammates up in every way possible.Tags: Jason Kidd Bio, Jason Kidd basketball, New Jersey Nets basketball, Steve Nash, Vince Carter, Kevin Garnett, Gary Payton, Ray Allen, Jason Terry, Dirk Nowitzki, Richard Jefferson

Filled in era of greats like John Stockton, Michael Jordan, and Charles Barkley, Karl Malone played in one of the most exciting eras of modern basketball. Though Karl Malone never won an NBA championship with the Utah Jazz, he left a lasting legacy in Utah and on the game of basketball.Karl Malone retired from the NBA as a two time Most Valuable Player, along with fourteen All-Star nominations. He is one of the most decorated power forwards to ever play the game of basketball. This Karl Malone biography will bring you along every highlight of Karl's journey in the NBA.Here is a preview of what is inside this book:Early Life and ChildhoodCollege Years at Louisiana TechKarl Malone’s NBA CareerMalone’s Personal LifeKarl’s Impact on Basketball and BeyondKarl Malone’s LegacyAn excerpt from the book:Fans adorned in navy blue and purple at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City watched as one of their past heroes officially became an immortal when his number was raised to the rafters. There, it would hang forever as a testament to the legend that the man was and will forever be. On March 23, 2006, the Utah Jazz retired the number 32 before they took on the Washington Wizards. The number 32 has become forever synonymous with consistent delivery and the hard work of the player known as “The Mailman” for fans of the Jazz. Karl Malone spent the first eighteen years of his professional NBA career with the Jazz, forming a historic partnership with his teammate and fellow Hall of Famer John Stockton before joining the Los Angeles Lakers for his final year. Malone is considered by many to be one of the greatest power forwards of all time in the NBA. With 36,928 points throughout his nineteen professional seasons, he has the second highest amount of points ever among players. To add to his accomplishments, the Mailman was named MVP of the league twice, named to the All-NBA team eleven times, and he made the All-Star team fourteen times. If there is anything more to further cement his legacy in basketball, Malone was a part of the historic “Dream Team”, representing the United States national team during both the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympic games, which resulted in gold medals on both occasions. At the same time, there are a few critics who argue that Malone is one of basketball’s biggest villains. Malone had a body made of muscle, weighing 256 pounds with less than 5% body fat, that he threw around - particularly his elbows. Several instances involving the Mailman elbowing rival players stirred up controversies during his playing career. Fines and suspensions came Malone’s way and caused blemishes on how fans viewed him. The accomplishments of Malone’s basketball career are extraordinary, but so too are the circumstances that paved the way for them to be possible.Tags: karl malone, the mailman nba, nba greats, john stockton, utah jazz, dante exum, shaquille o'neal, magic johnson, kobe bryant, scottie pippen, michael jordan, patrick ewing, kareem abdul-jabbar, hakeem olajuwon, charles barkley, david robinson

As many successful championship teams have proven, the center position is one of the most vital roles in the NBA. From George Mikan, Bill Russell, and Wilt Chamberlain all the way to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Shaquille O'Neal, these centers have defined what it is to be great in the NBA.While there may have been great centers that have dominated the league, nobody could claim to be more complete than the Houston Rockets' legendary Hakeem Olajuwon. With his seven-foot, 250-pound frame, Olajuwon had size and strength. However, it was his overall skill level that got him the two championship trophies and MVP award he rightfully won. He was a nimble center despite being so massive. He had the grace of a ballet dancer and the footwork of a boxer whenever he went for his patented post moves. He could also drain jump shots, dribble all the way to the basket, and pass the ball whenever he saw open teammates. On top of all that, Hakeem Olajuwon was a great defender and leads the NBA in career blocks. As time passed and the center position diminished concerning skill and purpose in the NBA, many came to realize that we may never again see the likes of Hakeem Olajuwon or even other great pivot players. The NBA has transitioned into a positionless style that now focuses more on ball movement, spacing, and three-point shooting. Because of this, centers have been reduced to shot-blockers, rebounders, and targets for drop and lob passes.Tags: Joell Embiid Bio, 76ers basketball, ben simmons, kevin love, jahlil okafor, dario saric, nerlens noel, lebron james, markelle fultz, brett brown, giannis antetokounmpo

That is one of the most challenging questions to answer in the lore of NBA basketball. The league has seen its share of complete point guards, shooting guards, small forwards, and power forwards that could all shoot, rebound, make plays, and defend at elite levels. And especially in today's NBA era where skill matters most in a pace-and-space style of play. But somehow, complete centers are somewhat rare in the league. It is no secret that dominant and skilled centers have come and gone in the history of the NBA. Wilt Chamberlain and Shaquille O'Neal were both unstoppable athletic giants inside the paint. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Hakeem Olajuwon would leave their defenders scratching their heads because of the array of post moves they brought to the game. Meanwhile, David Robinson's and Dwight Howard's superior mobility have helped them become dominant centers on both ends of the floor. However, as far as all-around skills are concerned, those centers were far from being complete. We have seen centers that are unstoppable near the basket. There are also those that can spin heads with their post moves and superior athletic mobility. Some centers thrive by stretching the floor because of their three-point shooting. Others only care about doing their job at the defensive end by blocking shots and grabbing rebounds. There are even rare centers that could play the point from the post. However, you rarely see centers that could do all of those things at a high level.Tags: DeMarcus Cousins, New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings, University of Kentucky Basketball, Dwight Howard, Kemba Walker, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, Karl-Anthony Towns, Paul George

Some players have had the star pedigree ever since the day they were born, only to be given the status as a superstar even before getting into the NBA. LeBron James is an example of that kind of a star journey. He was figuratively given the brass ring even before he set foot on an NBA hard floor. This was rightfully so because he already had star quality even before he became a professional player. There are also those whose potentials were already apparent, but needed maturing and sharpening. Kobe Bryant, Paul George, and Kawhi Leonard are examples. Everyone knew they had the talent, drive, and work ethic to become stars. But they needed time and honing before they achieved their potentials. After the passage of time, those players evolved to become some of the best of their era.And some players had to work their way up from obscurity to be named as one of the elites in the league. Dirk Nowitzki came into the NBA as an unknown, but quickly rose to become one of the all-time greats. You also have Draymond Green and Manu Ginobili, who were both second-round picks, but reached the heights of championships and All-Star appearances nevertheless. All it took was for them to get over the brand of being relatively unknown and work through that to exceed expectations.Different stars had different roads to take for them to be part of the NBA’s elite. Some had it easy, while some had it rough. Some took a lot of time, while some took none at all. It all depends on the individual players’ pacing. It is not always about the destination, but more about the journey, as they say. But for all the different routes that different NBA players had to take to become stars, it is Kyle Lowry’s own road to becoming elite that is most exciting and inspirational. It’s a game-changer that could either bring the team back after being down by a lot or seal the game away as a dagger shot. It’s the kind of shot you need to spend hours of work on and several days of repetition to master, or at least hit at a good clip. In the history of the NBA, a lot of games have been sealed or put away early because of the three-point shot. And in league history, nobody has ever hit more of those shots than the sniper they call Ray Allen. With almost 3,000 career three-pointers made, Ray Allen is the finest outside marksman the league has ever seen from a historical standpoint. He was one of the few players that lived from the three-point arc as his mindset was always to shoot the ball from the outside as much as he could. But Allen did not do so just because he wanted to. Making a lot of three-pointers is not as simple as putting up a lot of attempts from that spot on the floor. But Ray-Ray did so because that was the skill he mastered from a young age. He’s put hours of work and repetition to learn that shot, and he’s mastered it at several spots on the floor to be effective from well all over outside or inside the perimeter.Tags: Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Allen Iverson, Rajon Rondo, Chris Bosh, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Milwaukee Bucks, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics

They can score, rebound, make plays, bring the ball, defend, and even lead. Known as the Swiss Army knives of basketball, do-it-all wingmen are recognized for the versatility that their athleticism and basketball skills allow them to do. More often than not, championship teams are built with an all-around player on their roster. When you talk about the best all-around players in the league, you can never forget about names such as LeBron James, Scottie Pippen, Grant Hill, Larry Bird, and Kevin Durant. Even Magic Johnson, a point guard, could play the wings because of his size and athleticism. While those are the basics of what makes a star in the league, there are those who usually stand out amongst other stars because they are simply the overall package. They have the stats and the abilities that allow their team to win but also have the personality and wit that make them unique and endearing to basketball fans all over the world.Names such as Michael Jordan and the late Kobe Bryant come to mind when it comes to out-of-the-world stars with competitive personalities that made them stand out. On a lighter note, you can talk about big men such as Shaquille O’Neal and Joel Embiid as not only players who are literally huge but also have fun-loving personalities that are even bigger than they are. Then there are personalities such as LeBron James and Stephen Curry, who have their own unique ways of endearing themselves to fans. And while it was Jordan’s combination of skill, athleticism, and charisma that dominated the 90s era of basketball, arguably the second-biggest star you can think of back then when you factor in his overall uniqueness as a basketball player and charismatic appeal is the legendary Charles Barkley, who is well-loved even today because of his comedic value and outspoken personality.Charles Barkley was not someone anyone expected to become a dominant force in the NBA with respect to his play on the court. Playing power forward during arguably the most physical era in the history of the NBA, Barkley had to contend in the paint against centers and power forwards who were half a foot taller than he is. Barkley might have been registered as 6’6” but he frankly admitted that he was barely 6’5”. While we do not really know the truth about his height, Barkley was certainly a small man playing amongst giants during the 80s and 90s, which are the golden decades of centers in the NBA.Did you enjoy this excerpt? One of those arenas is baseball, and one particular modern-day player who knows the importance, reality, and payoff of such a work ethic that exemplifies practicing is Bryce Harper.Bryce Harper exploded into the professional Major League Baseball scene at the age of 19. His career began with the Washington Nationals during the 2012 season after only a month into regular season play. However, success, stardom and obtaining a "break" doesn't just happen. It is a process that comes and continues after an individual has invested not only their time but themselves in their field of endeavor or what their heart has a passion for.Such is the entire story of Bryce Harper, a tale of natural athleticism that is enhanced through Harper's commitment to practice, practice, practice. This commitment to excel was exhibited when he first started taking batting practice in the family's homemade batting cage in their garage, to participation in a national tournament when he was just seven years old, on up through his high school years, and into his current major-league career. Harper has indicated that his father, to help him practice his swing, literally threw millions of pitches. It was also during these father-and-son practice sessions that Harper began to develop the technique of scattering hit baseballs to all areas within the baseball field.Hope you liked this excerpt! They’d rather see them posting up or camping inside the paint. You could actually say that big men who were fond of shooting long-range shots often found themselves on the far-end of the bench back in the day.Fast forward to today’s NBA and you’d see a near 7-footer named Kevin Durant playing as a small forward and making his living out on the perimeter. You would see 7-footer big men like Chris Bosh, Kelly Olynyk, Kristaps Porzingis, Andrea Bargnani, and Nikola Vucevic camping out between 18 and 25 feet away from the basket to shoot jumpers over smaller defenders. And you know what? Everyone’s okay with it. Nobody goes crazy over 7-footers trying to take over the game with their perimeter shooting. In fact, coaches even love the fact that big men venture out of the paint to stretch defenses. Decades ago, nobody thought that these types of players could actually impact the game. Now, they’re as big a part of the game of basketball as any type of player.
