  • Babies Start Here: First Words

    Bill Gillham

Paperback (Frances Lincoln Ltd, Feb. 15, 2003)
Educational psychologist Bill Gillham has created a fun and innovative early-language book, based research in the UK and USA into the words that children actually choose to use when they start to speak. Each spread has four key illustrations taken from the list of words, such as teddy, doll, bricks and house. On the opposite page, an illustrated scene contains varied examples of each object, such as different sized dolls or real bricks and a picture of bricks painted on a toy box. Children are asked to identify each object and are then encouraged to search the picture for more examples of it. Hence they learn both to conceptualize each word and to deploy them in different situations. This unique, interactive book enables parents to actively help young children to develop early-language skills.
