  • Grandma's Halloween Stories

    Joan Tenner

Hardcover (Wisdom House Books, Nov. 20, 2019)
A mother's delight are her grandchildren. For this "grandmother" a special time for her was to share Halloween. The grandchildren would always stop at grandma's house dressed in their costumes prior to their night of trick or treating and listened to spooky stories of ghost, goblins, and witches. As grandma read her stories, her grandchildren listen wide-eyed and spellbound. Little did the children know, though they may have suspected, Grandma was the witch in her stories. Surely not, the children "all agreed, the stories were not true" - but fun to tell and read. No witch could brew a magic stew or cast a magic spell! That is all just make believe for nights like Halloween" . . . or was it?

  • Poverty As Human Contestability Failure

    Parvesh K Chopra

Hardcover (Wisdom House UK, Sept. 1, 2007)
Poverty as human contestility failure proposes an alternative framework for poverty analysis and identifies poverty as a situation of human contestability failure. The nature and causes of poverty are numerous and no doubt vary considerably between communities and over time. This book argues that poverty is not just a matter of low income, but is a 'situation of human contestability failure that prevents individuals, families and groups to fully participate in society'. Further,'a person's ability to 'compete' in the society is...a function of thats person's capabilities and comand over resorces'. A major element in the judgement as to whether someone is poor comes from measuring their current income (and hence their immediate command over resorces). But the ability to 'compete' in society is also linked (and perhaps increasingly linked) with skills, training and education. The lack of skills is a major handicap in competing in the labour market, thereby generating low income; but low income itself is a barrier to the acquistionof skills and education. The detailed investigation into poverty amongst the South Asian communities of the United Kingdom provides much food for thought, and should be of particular intrest to anyone concerned with the levels of poverty and inequality in the UK and anyone intrested in the position of ethnic minorities in British society. The approach of the book is textual, analytical and empirical.
