  • A Countess at School

    E M Channon

eBook (Books to Treasure, April 11, 2017)
This is a very attractive and original story of a girls’ boarding-school—full of incident. The chief character is not the “Countess,” but another girl who at first is somewhat snobbish, being ashamed of her mother’s excellent private hotel, and very keen on keeping all knowledge of it from the other girls. How she fails in an attempt to ingratiate herself with the supposed “Countess” is related by the author in a way which cannot fail to appeal to any schoolgirl.
  • The First Fifth Form

    Evelyn Smith

language (Books to Treasure, Dec. 18, 2012)
The author whose brilliance gave us "Binkie" and "Nicky" may be counted upon for a succession of amusing incidents, a high standard of character drawing, and in The First Fifth Form she more than maintains her reputation. Pat, Grace, the Parker-Pratts and Betsey are living persons whom we know intimately long before the Fifth Form has risen to its full dignity. In the process Winkle and Betsey show up with startling effect, while Pat patiently works, by turns aided and hindered by Grace, but always up against the self-conceit of the Parker-Pratts.The intriguing history of the Shakespeare Garden and the remarkable incident of the unofficial "Sports" are only two points in a book which every girl will read with delight.

At first her undistinguished form at hockey, her responsibility for a disaster in a three-legged race, and her small size, vexed her as handicaps, but very soon she had opportunities for shining in her own sphere. An epidemic of influenza was one of the incidents which gave her her chance. One way and another she soon made herself liked by everybody—including the big Betty Wilkinson—and before the end of the story the school has good reason to be grateful to her. She is a jolly little girl, with a head on her shoulders, and her schoolfellows include some amusing and memorable young characters.
