  • Le Morte D'Arthur Volume 2

    Thomas Malory

    eBook (, March 26, 2015)
Volume two of Le Morte D'Arthur, Sir Thomas Malory's powerful and elegaic version of the Arthurian legend, recounts the adventures of Sir Tristram de Liones and the treachery of Sir Mordred, and follows Sir Launcelot's quest for The Holy Grail, his fatally divided loyalties, and his great, forbidden love for the beautiful Queen Guenever. Culminating in an account of Arthur's final battle against the scheming, deceitful Mordred, this is the definitive re-telling of the Arthurian myth, weaving a story of adultery, treachery and ultimately - in its tragic finale - death. Edited and published by William Caxton in 1485, Malory's moving prose romance looks back to an idealised Medieval age of chivalry

Audio CD (Blackstone Audiobooks, Nov. 1, 2009)
This monumental work made the Arthurian cycle available for the first time in English. Malory took a body of legends from Celtic folklore that had been adapted into French literature, gave them an English perspective, and produced a work which ever since has had tremendous influence upon literature. The story begins with King Uther Pendragon's use of enchantment to lay with Igraine, Duchess of Cornwall. Arthur is conceived and taken away in secret, returning as a young man to claim the throne by pulling the sword Excalibur from the stone. In retelling the story of Arthur's rule of Britain, Malory intertwines the romances of Guinevere and Launcelot, Tristram and Isolde, and Launcelot and Elaine. Sir Galahad's appearance at Camelot begins the quest for the Holy Grail. Finally, Camelot is brought down by the conflict between King Arthur and his natural son, Mordred.

(Quote from wikipedia.org)About the AuthorThomas Malory (1405 - 1471)Sir Thomas Malory (c. 1405 - March 14, 1471) was an English writer, the author or compiler of Le Morte d'Arthur. The antiquary John Leland (1506-1552) believed him to be Welsh, but most modern scholarship assumes that he was Sir Thomas Malory of Newbold Revel in Warwickshire. The surname appears in various spellings, including Maillorie, Mallory, Mallery, and Maleore. The name comes from the Old French adjective maleure (from Latin male auguratus) meaning ill-omened or unfortunate.Few facts are certain in Malory's history. He was probably born sometime around 1405 (though some scholars have suggested an earlier date). He died in March of 1471, less than two years after completing his lengthy book. Twice elected to a seat in Parliament, he also accrued an long list of criminal charges during the 1450s, including burglary, rape, sheep stealing, and attempting to ambush the Duke of Buckingham. He escaped from jail on two occasions, once by fighting his way out with a variety of weapons and by swimming a moat. Malory was imprisoned at several l

PREFACE TO THE NEW EDITION. THE present edition of a work which, now some twenty years before the public, may justly be said to have maintained a standard character, has been undertaken at the request of the author's family. The Editor takes pleasure in saying that, in the minute revision to which the book has been subjected, he has found little more to do than to carry out to a greater completeness the lines of Mr. Soule's original design. That design, not only in its general conception, but in the execution of its details, seems to him, on the whole, the best that any single work on Synonymes in our language affords, - an impression which has grown stronger during the process of comparison with the chief works of that class rendered necessary in preparing this edition, and which it is believed a like comparison on the part of readers will surely corroborate. The judicious consulter of a synonymic dictionary will readily acquiesce in the statement that a perfect manual of that sorAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings.
