  • The Two Brothers

    Honoré de Balzac

(CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, March 7, 2017)
In 1792 the townspeople of Issoudun enjoyed the services of a physician named Rouget, whom they held to be a man of consummate malignity. Were we to believe certain bold tongues, he made his wife extremely unhappy, although she was the most beautiful woman of the neighborhood. Perhaps, indeed, she was rather silly. But the prying of friends, the slander of enemies, and the gossip of acquaintances, had never succeeded in laying bare the interior of that household. Doctor Rouget was a man of whom we say in common parlance, “He is not pleasant to deal with.” Consequently, during his lifetime, his townsmen kept silence about him and treated him civilly. His wife, a demoiselle Descoings, feeble in health during her girlhood (which was said to be a reason why the doctor married her), gave birth to a son, and also to a daughter who arrived, unexpectedly, ten years after her brother, and whose birth took the husband, doctor though he were, by surprise. This late-comer was named Agathe.

    Honoré Balzac

(CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 2, 2018)
This is the best side to be released if Balzac has not read at all. The narrative has a bit of everything that makes it an undeniable recital, including some very fast impressions. The essayist bogs down half a dozen pages at the beginning, discussing the kinship connections to sanction the set. Do not worry about your attention to detail in that part. Continue and soon the key stars will be completely prole. Since then, it is a fascinating life, excellent to interpret. As always, Balzac, the narrator, offers a penetrating hallucination of the proceeding released in the time of narrating the chimera. It is fascinating to know how little it has changed in the last 150 years in regard to human nature.

    (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The two brothers are Philippe and Joseph Bridau. Five years prior, Philippe, a dashing young officer, was Napoleon's aide-de-camp but he is now on half pay. Joseph is a poor aspiring artist. Their mother Agathe Bridau, a widow, has combined her resources with those of her aunt, Madame Descoings and set up a household in Paris. The story takes place in Paris and in Issoudun, one hundred miles south of Paris where Agathe's well-to-do brother, Jean-Jacques Rouget, lives. Some years ago, M. Rouget took a young peasant girl into his household. She is now grown and rules not only the household but the old gentleman who loves her passionately. She has fallen in love with Max, a thorough rake who calls himself the "Grand Master of the Order of Idleness." His main interest in Flore is the financial gain she might be able to obtain from M. Rouget.
