The Sea Fairies is a children's fantasy novel written by L. Frank Baum, illustrated by John R. Neill, and published in 1911 by the Reilly & Britton Company, the publisher of Baum's series of Oz books. Baum dedicated the book to the otherwise-unknown "Judith of Randolph, Massachusetts" — most likely one of the child readers who corresponded with the author.

But ever since Cap'n Bill's accident, when he lost his leg, Charlie Griffiths had been the captain of the little schooner while his old master lived peacefully ashore with the Griffiths family.This was about the time Trot was born, and the old sailor became very fond of the baby girl. Her real name was Mayre, but when she grew big enough to walk, she took so many busy little steps every day that both her mother and Cap'n Bill nicknamed her "Trot," and so she was thereafter mostly called.It was the old sailor who taught the child to love the sea, to love it almost as much as he and her father did, and these two, who represented the "beginning and the end of life," became firm friends and constant companions.

Her father is the captain of a sailing schooner, and her constant companion is Cap'n Bill Weedles, a retired sailor with a wooden leg. (Cap'n Bill had been Trot's father's skipper, and Charlie Griffiths had been his mate, before the accident that took the older man's leg.) Trot and Cap'n Bill spend many of their days roaming the beaches near home, or rowing and sailing along the coast. One day, Trot wishes that she could see a mermaid; her wish is overheard, and granted the next day. The mermaids explain to Trot, and the distressed Cap'n Bill, that they are benevolent fairies; when they offer Trot a chance to pay a visit to their land in mermaid form, Trot is enthusiastic, and Bill is too loyal to let her go off without him.

The Sea Fairies is the story of one girl's journey to a magical underwater land. Tiny Trot loves the sea. She and her best friend, retired sailor Cap'n Bill, spend all their time in or on the ocean. They have seen many creatures, but never a mermaid, which Trot would dearly love to meet. When her wish is granted one day, she is amazed to learn that the mermaids are in fact good fairies, and they will let her and Cap'n Bill visit their home beneath the waves. Cap'n Bill is less than enthusiastic, but won't let his little friend go on her own. Together they set off for the land of Queen Aquarine and King Anko - but will the evil magician Zog ruin their trip? Written by the master storyteller L. Frank Baum, The Sea Fairies will delight young readers with its imagination and adventure.
