Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 5, 2017)
The Shunned House is the 1937 Novelette by the American author H. P. Lovecraft. It was first published in Weird Tales. The Shunned House is based on an actual house in Providence, Rhode Island, build in the eighteenth century. Lovecraft wrote, “On the northeast corner of Bridge Street and Elizabeth Avenue is a terrible old house—a hellish place where night-black deeds must have been done in the early seventeen-hundreds—with a blackish unpainted surface, unnaturally steep roof, and an outside flight of stairs leading to the second story, suffocatingly embowered in a tangle of ivy so dense that one cannot but imagine it accursed or corpse-fed. It reminded me of the Babbit House in Benefit Street…. Later its image came up again with renewed vividness, finally causing me to write a new horror story with its scene in Providence and with the Babbit House as its basis.” Odin’s Library Classics is dedicated to bringing the world the best of humankind’s literature from throughout the ages. Sometimes it enters directly into the composition of the events, while sometimes it relates only to their fortuitous position among persons and places. The latter sort is splendidly exemplified by a case in the ancient city of Providence, where in the late forties Edgar Allan Poe used to sojourn often during his unsuccessful wooing of the gifted poetess, Mrs. Whitman. Poe generally stopped at the Mansion House in Benefit Street—the renamed Golden Ball Inn whose roof has sheltered Washington, Jefferson, and Lafayette—and his favorite walk led northward along the same street to Mrs. Whitman's home and the neighboring hillside churchyard of St. John's, whose hidden expanse of Eighteenth Century gravestones had for him a peculiar fascination. Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, March 27, 2013)
“Bunch together a group of people deliberately chosen for strong religious feelings, and you have a practical guarantee of dark morbidities expressed in crime, perversion, and insanity.” -H. P. Lovecraft A posthumous story of immense power, written by a master of weird fiction--a tale of a revolting horror in the cellar of an old house in New England. Published posthumously in the October 1937 issue of Weird Tales, "The Shunned House" recounts the history of a vacant house in Providence, Rhode Island. As a child, the unnamed protagonist and his friends would sneak into the cellar where luminescent fungi grew and strange fogs seeped out of the ground. As an adult, he shared his interest with his uncle Dr. Elihu Whipple, who, also fascinated with the mysterious house, provided him with research materials to study. The house was built upon a former burial ground by a sea captain. Over the years his family lived there, members of the household would sicken and died. The people who survived suffered from physical or mental weakness. No one suspected the house of anything more sinister than toxic mold and tainted water. Generations had moved in and died before the house could be abandoned. The protagonist continued to research the house, looking farther back into the records for clues to the reason why the house was so eerily contaminated. What he found spurred him into action – to spend one night with his uncle in the cellar of the shunned house. And that's when things get weird.

Lovecraft "The Shunned House" is a novelette by H. P. Lovecraft in the horror fiction genre. Written on October 16–19, 1924, it was first published in the October 1937 issue of Weird Tales. The Shunned House of the title is based on an actual house in Providence, Rhode Island, built around 1763 and still standing at 135 Benefit Street; Lovecraft was familiar with the house because his aunt, Lillian Clark, lived there in 1919-20 as a companion to Mrs. H. C. Babbit. But it was another house in Elizabeth, New Jersey that actually provoked Lovecraft to write the story. As he wrote in a letter: On the northeast corner of Bridge Street and Elizabeth Avenue is a terrible old house — a hellish place where night-black deeds must have been done in the early seventeen-hundreds — with a blackish unpainted surface, unnaturally steep roof, and an outside flight of stairs leading to the second story, suffocatingly embowered in a tangle of ivy so dense that one cannot but imagine it accursed or corpse-fed. It reminded me of the Babbit House in Benefit Street.... Later its image came up again with renewed vividness, finally causing me to write a new horror story with its scene in Providence and with the Babbit House as its basis. This location is at present[when?] the site of a plaza named in honor of Winfield Scott, who was the namesake of Lovecraft's father.
