  • The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

    Mark Twain

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 1, 2014)
“Who knows, he may grow up to be President someday, unless they hang him first!" Mark Twain’s classic novel about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River has enchanted readers for over a century. This lively tale of boyhood shenanigans is set in St. Petersburg, Missouri, where Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn have the kinds of adventures many boys can imagine: racing bugs during class, impressing girls, especially Becky Thatcher, with fights and stunts in the schoolyard, getting lost in a cave, and playing pirates on the Mississippi River. Twain based ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ largely on his personal memories of growing up in Hannibal in the 1840s. In his preface to the novel, he states that “[m]ost of the adventures recorded in this book really occurred” and that the character of Tom Sawyer has a basis in “a combination . . . of three boys whom I knew.” Indeed, nearly every figure in the novel comes from the young Twain’s village experience: Aunt Polly shares many characteristics with Twain’s mother; Mary is based on Twain’s sister Pamela; and Sid resembles Twain’s younger brother, Henry. ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ remains perhaps the most popular and widely read of all Twain’s works.

  • The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

    Mark Twain, Grover Gardner

    2008 (Blackstone Audio, Inc., July 1, 2008)
AudioFile Earphones Award Winner This humorous and nostalgic novel takes the listener back to the carefree days of boyhood in Hannibal, Missouri, where Mark Twain grew up. Just what did boys do in a small Midwestern town during the mid-1800s, a time when there were no televisions, no arcades, and no videos? They whitewashed fences, floated down rivers, traded marbles, formed secret societies, smoked pipes, and, on occasion, managed to attend their own funerals. Yes, they may have been a bit mischievous, but as Aunt Polly said of Tom when she believed him to be dead, 'He was the best-hearted boy that ever was.' Aunt Polly's sentiments reveal a cardinal tenet of Twain's philosophy: In this deceitful and infirm world, innocence can be found only in the heart of a boy.

  • The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

    Mark Twain, Rachel Lay

    eBook (, April 20, 2014)
    • The book includes 10 unique illustrations that are relevant to its content. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is an 1876 novel about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River. The story is set in the Town of "St. Petersburg", inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Mark Twain lived.Tom Sawyer introduces several significant figures in American mythology, including the hero of Huckleberry Finn, one of the central works of American literature. Nonetheless, Tom Sawyer is not just a dress rehearsal for its more powerful sequel. Allowing for nineteenth-century conventions of language and sentimentality in literature for young adults, the novel retains vitality and humor in exploring questions of freedom and responsibility. Like Huckleberry Finn, the book presents limitation, alienation, and horror as elements profoundly affecting a small Missouri town's young people, whose minds are shaped as much by superstition, romantic fiction, and nightmare visions as by social convention. It also resembles Huckleberry Finn in showing a painful moral growth that demands the risk of one's own welfare to assist another, while at the same time treating the reader to outlandish humor, melodramatic action, and a happy ending.
