Everything he wrote was written with a distinct purpose. Yeast and Alton Locke portray the miserable condition of the working classes of England fifty years ago in town and country. Hypatia, Hereward the Wake, and West ward Ho! Are romances of the fifth, eleventh, and sixteenth centuries, which stirred the last genera tion profoundly and will live on account of their intrinsic merits as historical sketches. The only novel, pure and simple, Kingsley ever wrote was Two Years Ago.
