THE ODYSSEY by Homer. Narrated by Norman Dietz. Enjoyed by countless millions and studied by innumerable scholars, The Odyssey is a significant block in the foundation of Western literature. Homer's account of the adventures of Odysseus has stood at the center of classical literature for centuries. Here is the sweeping story of a great warrior who wanders the world, and also an intensely domestic tale of a loving husband's fight to protect an enduring union. For 20 years, Odysseus struggles against terrible fortune and irresistible temptation—Polyphemos the Cyclops, the enchantress Circe, the deadly Sirens—all to return to his faithful wife Penelope. The Othssel remains a uniquely personal literary experience, startling each new generation of readers with its excitement, its drama, and its remarkably contemporary hero. "This version is excellent. Dietz's narration is semi-voiced and stead); and characters are subtly individualized, allowing the natural drama of the tale to predominate.'—Kliatt Author Homer, as the legend goes, was a blind poet in ancient Greece. He is typically credited with composing both The Iliad and The Odyssey, along with other classics. However, there is no consensus among scholars and historians as to exactly who Homer was, or even if he existed at all. Some have speculated that Homer may have been a name used to describe the poetic efforts of a group of men, or that Homer may have actually been a woman Narrator Norman Dietz is a professional storyteller who has toured from coast to coast. Since 1962, his solo performances have brought stories and dramatic pieces to audiences young and old. He has also established a career in radio and television and is author of two collections of works for the stage. His narrations have earned rave reviews, especially for his interpretations of Mark Twain's works.

Excerpt from The Odyssey: Rendered Into English Prose for the Use of Those Who Cannot Read the OriginalOther difficulties will also disappear as soon as the development of the poem in the writer's mind is understood. I have dealt with this at some length in pp. 251 - 261 of The Authoress of the Odyssey Briefly, the Odyssey consists of two distinct poems (l) The Return of Ulysses, which alone the Muse is asked to sing in the opening lines of the poem. This poem includes the Phaeacian episode, and the account of Ulysses' adventures as told by himself in Books ix - xii. It consists of lines 1 - 7 9 (roughly) of Book i., of line 28 of Book v., and thence without intermission to the middle of line 187 of Book xiii., at which point the original scheme was abandoned.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
