In 1916 Colum wrote The King of Ireland's Son which was his first children's book. This book later received a Nubery honor. The hero is the youngest son of the King of Ireland. He has many adventures finding and winning the hand of Fedelma the daughter of an Enchanter. Fedelma is kidnapped by the king of the Land of Mist. The plot of The King of Ireland's Son is based on an old Irish folktale.
