The book consists of 14 independent articles arranged by themes:ON BEING IDLE.ON BEING IN LOVE.ON BEING IN THE BLUES.ON BEING HARD UP.ON VANITY AND VANITIES.ON GETTING ON IN THE WORLD.ON THE WEATHER.ON CATS AND DOGS.ON BEING SHY.ON BABIES.ON EATING AND DRINKING.ON FURNISHED APARTMENTS.ON DRESS AND DEPORTMENT.ON MEMORYBook excerptsā€œThere are various methods by which you may achieve ignominy and shame. By murdering a large and respected family in cold blood and afterward depositing their bodies in the water companies' reservoir, you will gain much unpopularity in the neighborhood of your crime, and even robbing a church will get you cordially disliked, especially by the vicar. But if you desire to drain to the dregs the fullest cup of scorn and hatred that a fellow human creature can pour out for you, let a young mother hear you call dear baby 'it.'ā€ā€œThat is just the way with Memory; nothing that she brings to us is complete. She is a willful child; all her toys are broken. I remember tumbling into a huge dust-hole when a very small boy, but I have not the faintest recollection of ever getting out again; and if memory were all we had to trust to, I should be compelled to believe I was there still.ā€ā€œIt is impossible to enjoy idling thoroughly unless one has plenty of work to do. There is no fun in doing nothing when you have nothing to do. Wasting time is merely an occupation then, and a most exhausting one. Idleness, like kisses, to be sweet must be stolen.ā€ā€œSwearing relieves the feelings--that is what swearing does. I explained this to my aunt on one occasion, but it didn't answer with her. She said I had no business to have such feelings.

    (Independently published, Dec. 18, 2019)
Published in 1886 and dedicated to the writerā€™s ally in idlingā€”his pipeā€”this collection of entertaining essays established Jerome K. Jerome as an eminent English wit. ā€œWhat readers ask nowadays in a book is that it should improve, instruct, and elevate. This book wouldnā€™t elevate a cow. I cannot conscientiously recommend it for any useful purposes whatever. All I can suggest is that when you get tired of reading ā€˜the best hundred books,ā€™ you may take this up for half an hour. It will be a change.ā€ Here are his idle and amusing thoughts on all aspects of lifeā€”from love to poverty, vanity to ambition, babies to cats and dogsā€”and, of course, on the pleasures of spending oneā€™s time idling.

Now, this is a subject on which I flatter myself I really am au fait. The gentleman who, when I was young, bathed me at wisdom's font for nine guineas a termā€”no extrasā€”used to say he never knew a boy who could do less work in more time; and I remember my poor grandmother once incidentally observing, in the course of an instruction upon the use of the Prayer-book, that it was highly improbable that I should ever do much that I ought not to do, but that she felt convinced beyond a doubt that I should leave undone pretty well everything that I ought to do.
