The story chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy Gale in the Land of Oz, after being swept away from her Kansas farm home in a cyclone. The novel is one of the best-known stories in American popular culture and has been widely translated. James Thurber was one of the first important authors to write about Oz author, L. Frank Baum. In 1943 he published Baum's profile "The Wizard of Chitenango" (sic) in the New Republic. He later wrote the introduction to the 1960 Fawcett paperback edition of The Wizard of Oz.
