    Dorothy Canfield, John Williams

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 21, 2011)
The Squirrel-Cage is the story of Lydia Emery, a brilliant young woman from a conventional upper-middle-class family, who allows herself to be steered into marriage with Paul Hollister, an ambitious but tiresome businessman, despite the fact that she is in love with Daniel Rankin, a revolutionary, idealistic cabinetmaker. The novel captures the trapped feeling of many married women of the early twentieth century, but it is flawed by an easy solution, a dynamo accident which leaves Lydia a widow. Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, April 29, 2018)
Excerpt from The Squirrel-Cage Even the oldest son, prosperous, well-established manu facturer that he was, could not recall without a shudder his first dinner-party. A branch of the Hollisters had moved next door to the Emerys and, to Mrs. Emery's great satisfaction, an easy neighborly acquaintance had sprung up between the two families. Secure in this familiarity, and not distinguishing the immense difference between a chance invitation to drop in to dinner and a formal invitation to dine, the young business-man had almost forgotten the date for which he had been bidden. Remembering it with a start, he had gone straight from his office to the house of his hosts, supposing that he would be able, as he had done many times before, to wash his face and hands in the bath-room and brush his hair in the room of the son of the house.
