da Vinci Leonardo, Martin Clayton, Windsor Castle Royal Library, England) Queen's Gallery (London

Hardcover (Abbeville Pr, May 1, 1996)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was arguably the greatest draftsman in the history of Western art. Best known as a painter, he also excelled as a sculptor, architect, musician, anatomist, botanist, engineer, geologist, and mapmaker. But since he completed few of his projects, most of his work is known to us only through his drawings and notes. The collection of drawings by Leonardo at Windsor Castle is the most important in the world. This selection from Windsor Castle of one hundred sheets covers every aspect of his genius, reproducing in color for the first time many unfamiliar drawings as well as a range of better-known works.Included are preparatory sketches for the paintings such as the Adoration of the Magi and the Last Supper, designs for equestrian monuments, war machines, and costumes for court entertainments; studies relating to his enduring interest in water, flight, the divinely beautiful, and the comically grotesque; his striking and highly accurate maps; his analyses of human and equine proportion; and his studies in anatomy, taking the subject single-handedly from medieval traditions to the threshold of modern knowledge.

    Bruno Santi

Paperback (Riverside Book Company, Dec. 31, 1990)
Leonardo was born in the village of Vinci, between the Tuscan cities of Empoli and Pistoia, on 15th April 1452. In 1469 the family moved to Florence, where his father sent him to study with the most versatile and sought-after Florentine master of the time: the sculptor; painter and goldsmith Andrea Verrocchio. In 1472 he was enrolled as a master in the Company of Painters. Leonardo was attracted to every sort of artistic discipline, and was able to complement those disciplines with his scientific knowledge, the fruit of tireless investigation into natural phenomena, which he observed acutely. Leonardo da Vinci examines the life of this painter, sculptor and engineer, including his time spent at the workshop of Verrochio, and the political and cultural atmosphere of Florence around 1480. The book also concentrates on particular elements found in da Vinci's works, including his use of action and movement, anatomy, mechanics, and caricature - and, of course, that smile.

    Walter Isaacson, Alfred Molina

Audio CD (Simon & Schuster Audio, Oct. 2, 2018)
The #1 New York Times bestseller from Walter Isaacson brings Leonardo da Vinci to life in this exciting new biography that is “a study in creativity: how to define it, how to achieve it…Most important, it is a powerful story of an exhilarating mind and life” (The New Yorker).Based on thousands of pages from Leonardo da Vinci’s astonishing notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, Walter Isaacson “deftly reveals an intimate Leonardo” (San Francisco Chronicle) in a narrative that connects his art to his science. He shows how Leonardo’s genius was based on skills we can improve in ourselves, such as passionate curiosity, careful observation, and an imagination so playful that it flirted with fantasy. He produced the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry. He explored the math of optics, showed how light rays strike the cornea, and produced illusions of changing perspectives in The Last Supper. His ability to stand at the crossroads of the humanities and the sciences, made iconic by his drawing of Vitruvian Man, made him history’s most creative genius. In the “luminous” (Daily Beast) Leonardo da Vinci, Isaacson describes how Leonardo’s delight at combining diverse passions remains the ultimate recipe for creativity. So, too, does his ease at being a bit of a misfit: illegitimate, gay, vegetarian, left-handed, easily distracted, and at times heretical. His life should remind us of the importance to be imaginative and, like talented rebels in any era, to think different. Here, da Vinci “comes to life in all his remarkable brilliance and oddity in Walter Isaacson’s ambitious new biography…a vigorous, insightful portrait” (The Washington Post).
