Paperback (Trafford Publishing, Jan. 24, 2006)
A magical tale about a group of children's idyllic lifestyle, set in a little village, high up in the Black Forest mountains of Germany. The children spend their days skating on the local pond, which freeze's over in the winter. When they get tired they drink hot chocolate, and in the evenings the pond is lit up with fairy lights. It's a magical place to live. Their leaders are two boys named Lapé and Friedmar. One day their peace is shattered when a horrible witch called Gazille arrives and sets up home in a castle in the middle of their village. She has special shoes that have magical powers and she soon casts various spells that ruin the children's happiness. Tormented and upset the children turn to their leaders to help them get rid of this evil witch. Eventually she turns their precious ice-rink into a swimming pool. It's the final straw, but all is not lost as Friedmar comes up with a brilliant idea. He asks Gazille to show them how to swim. She is delighted because she loves showing off and quickly takes off her clothes, puts on her swimming togs, and dives in. Friedmar waits until she is half way across, then dashes to the pile of clothes, grabs the magic shoes and flings them into a large bonfire - destroying them completely. Gazille realises what has happened but it is too late. When the shoes are burning the pond turns back to ice, trapping Gazille in the middle. But the children are no longer afraid because her magic is gone and they even help pull her out. When she realises her shoes are burned she nearly explodes in a fit of rage. Realising all is lost, she dashes through the forest (barefoot) never to return. The children are happy once again and can safely resume their ice-skating now that the witch has gone forever.
