    Andrew Lang

    eBook (, July 3, 2013)
This book is an illustrated version of the original The Crimson Fairy Book by Andrew Lang. “Homer composed the 'Odyssey,' and somebody else composed the Story of Jason and the Fleece of Gold, and the enchantress Medea, out of a set of wandering popular tales, which are still told among Samoyeds and Samoans, Hindoos and Japanese. All this has been known to the wise and learned for centuries, and especially since the brothers Grimm wrote in the early years of the Nineteenth Century. But children remain unaware of the facts, and so do their dear mothers; whence the Editor infers that they do not read his prefaces, and are not members of the Folk Lore Society, or students of Herr Kohler and M. Cosquin, and M. Henri Guidoz and Professor Child, and Mr. Max Muller. Though these explanations are not attended to by the Editor's customers, he makes them once more, for the relief of his conscience. Many tales in this book are translated, or adapted, from those told by mothers and nurses in Hungary; others are familiar to Russian nurseries; the Servians are responsible for some; a rather peculiarly fanciful set of stories are adapted from the Roumanians;”

language (Jazzybee Verlag, Dec. 13, 2012)
A storyteller's night without one of Mr. Andrew Lang's books of fairy tales would be but a dull affair. This one is " The Crimson Fairy Book ", made up of some three dozen tales chosen, as in previous collections, from the folk-lore of all nations, and adapted and translated mainly by Mrs. Lang. Mr. H. J. Ford's illustrations, colored and otherwise, are hardly equalled in artistic quality by those in any other children's book. This book is fully illustrated and annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer.Contents:PrefaceLovely IlonkaLucky LuckThe Hairy ManTo Your Good Health! The Story of the Seven SimonsThe Language of BeastsThe Boy Who Could Keep A SecretThe Prince And The DragonLittle WildroseTiidu The PiperPaperarellooThe Gifts Of The MagicianThe Strong PrinceThe Treasure SeekerThe Cottager And His CatThe Prince Who Would Seek ImmortalityThe Stone-CutterThe Gold-Bearded ManTritill, Litill, And The BirdsThe Three RobesThe Six Hungry BeastsHow the Beggar Boy Turned into Count PiroThe Rogue And The HerdsmanEisenkopfThe Death Of Abu Nowas And Of His WifeMotiratikaNiels And The GiantsShepherd PaulHow The Wicked Tanuki Was PunishedThe Crab And The MonkeyThe Horse Gullfaxi And The Sword GunnfoderThe Story Of The Sham Prince, Or The Ambitious TailorThe Colony Of CatsHow To Find Out A True FriendClever MariaThe Magic Kettle
