Eventually, River escaped and led a revolution against these cruel overlords. Now, she’s on a mission to find and recover the continent’s hidden reserves of the precious element known as starfall.Barreling through their post-apocalyptic world in a massive steam locomotive, River and her companions -the steam-powered ape named Socrates and his crew of warriors, miscreants, and genetic anomalies- travel from one unpredictable adventure to another. On their first outing, the crew encounters a bizarre cult of isolationists and their strange “Clockwork God.” Meanwhile, several crew members have gone missing, and tensions are rising as mutineers conspire to overthrow Socrates and destroy the train. As the conflict comes to a boil, a power more ancient and sinister than anything they ever imagined threatens to destroy them all.The "Iron Horse" series is a follow up to Sedgwick's Amazon list best-selling steampunk series, "The Tinkerer's Daughter." • The Clockwork Man

    E V Odle

    (Echo Library, Nov. 28, 2019)
Edwin Vincent Odle (1890-1942) was an editor and author who from 1926-c.1935 was the first editor of the British short story magazine, Argosy. His brother, the artist and illustrator Alan Odle, was married to avant-garde author Dorothy Richardson. Odle's scientific romance, The Clockwork Man, was first published in 1923 and shows the influence of J D Beresford, an author central to that form who may have helped with its publication, and also of H G Wells. It is the tale of a cyborg - a man into whose body a monitor/time machine has been inserted - who accidentally travels back in time from the far future to the present day, landing in the midst of a cricket match, and, as the 'mysterious stranger, ' describes a world regulated by machines
  • THE CLOCKWORK MAN

    E.V ODLE, Ian Perkin

    (Independently published, April 3, 2020)
The Clockwork Man is considered the first appearance of a cyborg in science fiction literature; his only other novel was never published and has been lost.CHAPTER ONE -THE COMING OF THE CLOCKWORK MAN- I -IT was just as Doctor Allingham had congratulated himself upon the fact that the bowling was broken, and that he had only to hit now and save the trouble of running, just as he was scanning the boundaries with one eye and with the other following Tanner's short, crooked arm raised high above the white sheet at the back of the opposite wicket, that he noticed the strange figure. Its abrupt appearance, at first sight like a scare-crow dumped suddenly on the horizon, caused him to lessen his grip upon the bat in his hand. His mind wandered for just that fatal moment, and his vision of the on-coming bowler was swept away and its place taken by that arresting figure of a man coming over the path at the top of the hill, a man whose attitude, on closer examination, seemed extraordinarily like another man in the act of bowling.

Fritz is also in the tavern; there to read aloud his new spooky story. Like Karl, he hasn't finished. Well, he knows how the story starts and he knows it's called Clockwork – so, with the snow swirling down outside, he sets his story going and just has to hope that the ending will come to him as he tells it. • Clockwork

    Philip Pullman

    Paperback (Scholastic, May 1, 2006)
The apprentice's friends think hearing the latest story by Fritz, the writer, will cheer poor Karl up. At least it will distract Karl from the fact that he hasn't produced a new moving figure for the great timepiece at the center of town, as he was supposed to. But to Fritz's horror the story he tells Karl begins to come true, and one of the main characters -- the evil Dr. Kalmenius -- shows up with a terrifying piece of clockwork. It's a knight called Sir Ironsoul. And when Karl decides to accept Dr. Kalmenius's offer and try to pass Sir Ironsoul off as his own work, the results are...well, deadly.
