Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

The mitigating hour softens the austerity of a mountain land scape magnificent in outline, however harsh and severe in detail; and, while it retains all its sublimity, removes much of the savage sternness of the strange and unrivalled scene. A fortified city, almost surrounded by ravines, and rising in the centre of chains of far spreading hills, occasionally offering, through their rocky glens, the gleams of a distant and richer land!The moon has sunk behind the Mount of Olives, and the stars in the darker sky shine doubly bright over the sacred city. The all pervading stillness is broken by a breeze, that seems to have travelled over the plain of Sharon from the sea. It wails among the tombs and sighs among the cypress groves. The palm tree trembles as it passes, as if it were a spirit of woe. Excerpt from Tancred, or the New CrusadeTancaao was published in r847, and has sometimes been described as the last of a trilogy of political novels, its two predecessors being Com'ngrby and Sybil; but in reality the book deals much leas with the realm of politics than with the'realm of ideas. Tancred, Lord Montacute, though born in the purple, is pro foundly dissatisfied with his environment, and the keynote of the work is struck in his first conversation with his father, the amiable Duke of Bellamont. The Duke at the outset imagines that his son is uneasy at the prevalence of revolutionary notions, and reassures him by asserting that the common sense of the country and the fifty-pound clause wfll carry us through. But when Tancred goes on with such declarations as I wish I knew what was good and great, I would struggle to accomplish it,and asks, Is there such a thing as religious truth?
