  • Diseases of the Nose, Throat and Ear, Medical and Surgical

    William Lincoln Ballenger

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Nov. 11, 2017)
Excerpt from Diseases of the Nose, Throat and Ear, Medical and SurgicalThe author has long believed that surgical technique could be most clearly elucidated by describing each step of the various operations in numbered paragraphs, and by complementing them with suitable draw ings. Nearly every operation is therefore illustrated, some with more than twenty drawings. About five hundred original drawings and plates have been thus used in the preparation of this work. The original sketches were made by the author, and were redrawn by Mr. James Kelly Parker, to whose intelligent cooperation much credit is due, and is gratefully acknowledged. An endeavor has been made to combine the advantages of a text-book and atlas, and, it is hoped, with a measurable degree of success.Tracheobronchoscopy and esophagoscopy have been brought to such a high degree of perfection, and the occasions for their employment are so numerous, that a fully illustrated chapter is devoted to their consideration. Before beginning this work, the author wrote to many of the leading specialists in the United States, England, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Holland, Switzerland, Canada, and Russia, asking for reprints of their published articles. The response was most generous, and resulted in the accumulation of nearly three thousand monographs, which have been freely used in the preparation of this volume. With every wish to name each one who so liberally responded, it is obviously impracticable in a work of this character. The author has, however, endeavored to give due credit in the text for writings consulted. A debt of gratitude is also due to colleagues who have so graciously contributed to whatever of success this volume may attain.Grateful appreciation is also due to Dr. George F. Suker, Dr. Joseph C. Beck, and Dr. Mortimer Frank for their assistance in translations, and in the compilation of the material used in portions of the text, and also to Dr. Henrietta Gould and Miss Mary Regan for efficient attention to many minor but important details.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Diseases of the Ear, Nose and Throat: Medical and Surgical

    Wendell Christopher Phillips

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Nov. 26, 2018)
Excerpt from Diseases of the Ear, Nose and Throat: Medical and Surgical IN presenting the Fourth Edition of this textbook, I desire to express my grateful appreciation Of the generous support accorded by my confreres, _ especially the teachers of oto - laryngology, by medical students, and the medical profession in general. Its adoption as the standard textbook by the majority of'the Medi cal Schools o.i the Country, together with the rapid exhaustion of the Third Edition, has encouraged me to revise the subject-matter in many particulars, and to add several items of new and up - to -date material. Especially has it been my desire to thoroughly Americanize this volume, by giving preference to the achievements of American otolo gists, rhinologists, and laryngologists. In line with this idea, I have eliminated the former chapter on Suspension Laryngoscopy and have introduced a new chapter upon this topic, illustrated with the Lynch instruments. I have also given a plain statement of the present status of the Hay Fever problem, commented upon the suction treatment of Nasal Accessory Sinus affections, and I have amplified the text relating to Ozena, the treatment of the diseased tonsil in adults, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
