Paperback (Crescent Moon Publishing, Sept. 25, 2017)
SEA AND SARDINIA by D.H. LAWRENCE A new edition of the travel book that D.H. Lawrence wrote about his journeys in Italy in the 1910s. Sea and Sardinia (1916) is one of Lawrence's lyrical travel works, also seen in Twilight In Italy. From chapter one: Here in Sicily it is so pleasant: the sunny Ionian sea, the changing jewel of Calabria, like a ļ¬re-opal moved in the light; Italy and the panorama of Christmas clouds, night with the dog-star laying a long, luminous gleam across the sea, as if baying at us, Orion marching above... • Sea and Sardinia

    D.H. Lawrence

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Dec. 29, 2017)
Written after the First World War when he was living in Sicily, Sea and Sardinia records Lawrence's journey to Sardinia and back in January 1921. It reveals his response to a new landscape and people and his ability to transmute the spirit of place into literary art. Like his other travel writings the book is also a shrewd inquiry into the political and social values of an era which saw the rise of communism and fascism. On one level an indictment of contemporary materialism, Sea and Sardinia is nevertheless an optimistic book, celebrating the creativity of the human spirit and seeking in the fundamental laws which governed human nature in the past fresh inspiration for the present. This 1997 edition restores censored passages and corrects corrupt textual readings to reveal for the first time the book Lawrence himself called 'a marvel of veracity'.

    D.H. Lawrence, Philip Bates

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 28, 2017)
David Herbert LAWRENCE (1885-1930), was born at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, one of five children of a miner and an ex-schoolteacher. He was often ill as a child and grew up in considerable poverty. He attended Nottingham High School for three years, but at 15 was forced to give up his education and take a job for a short time as a clerk in a surgical goods factory and then became a pupil teacher. In 1906, having worked to save the necessary, he took up a scholarship at Nottingham University College to study for a teacherĀ“s certificate. He was already writing poetry and short stories and he now began his first novel ā€œThe White Peacockā€ (1911), which was followed by ā€œThe Trespasserā€ (1912). He taught for two years at an elementary school in Croydon but after the death of his mother he became seriously ill and was advised to give up teaching. His first major novel, ā€œSons and Loversā€ (1913) is a faithful autobiographical account of these early years. His next novel, ā€œThe Rainbowā€ (1915), was seized by the police and declared obscene. At the Villa Mirenda, near Florence, he finished ā€œLady ChatterleyĀ“s Loverā€ (1928), his last novel and the one that was to cause more furore than any other. He died in Vence on 2 March 1930.

    D. H. Lawrence

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 10, 2015)
Comes over one an absolute necessity to move. And what is more, to move in some particular direction. A double necessity then: to get on the move, and to know whither. Why can't one sit still? Here in Sicily it is so pleasant: the sunny Ionian sea, the changing jewel of Calabria, like a fire-opal moved in the light; Italy and the panorama of Christmas clouds, night with the dog-star laying a long, luminous gleam across the sea, as if baying at us, Orion marching above; how the dog-star Sirius looks at one, looks at one! he is the hound of heaven, green, glamorous and fierce!ā€”and then oh regal evening star, hung westward flaring over the jagged dark precipices of tall Sicily: then Etna, that wicked witch, resting her thick white snow under heaven, and slowly, slowly rolling her orange-coloured smoke.
