Time, though a good Collector, is not always a reliable Historian. That is to say, that although nothing of interest or importance is lost, yet an affair may be occasionally invested with a glamour that is not wholly its own. I venture to think that Piracy has fortuned in this particular. We are apt to base our ideas of Piracy on the somewhat vague ambitions of our childhood; and I suppose, were such a thing possible, the consensus of opinion in our nurseries as to a future profession in life would place Piracy but little below the glittering heights of the police force and engine-driving. Incapable of forgetting this in more mature years, are we not inclined to deck Her (the “H” capital, for I speak of an ideal), if not in purple and fine linen, at least with a lavish display of tinsel and gilt? Nursery lore remains with us, whether we would or not, for all our lives; and generations of ourselves, as schoolboys and pre-schoolboys, have tricked out Piracy in so resplendent a dress that she has fairly ousted in our affections, not only her sister profession of “High Toby and the Road,” but every other splendid and villainous vocation. Yet Teach, Kid, and Avery were as terrible or grim as Duval, Turpin, and Sheppard were courtly or whimsical. And the terrible is a more vital affair than the whimsical.

  • Pirates!

    Mcmillan, Britton

Audio CD (Naxos AudioBooks, June 7, 2011)
Pirates are everywhere - and they have been ever since boats were used as carriers. They are in stories ranging from Treasure Island through Peter Pan to Pirates of the Caribbean; they are in our imaginations with peg-legs, hook-hands and parrots on their shoulders saying 'Aharr, me hearties!' and they continue to cause havoc in the Gulf of Aden in the 21st century. This book humorously charts the adventures of pirates through the ages, including Henry Morgan, Blackbeard, Calico Jack and girl pirates too! There are countless surprising facts here - many pirates died at the end of a rope, but some were even knighted for their services! And there are plenty of 'Gruesome Alerts', just to prepare you for the extra gory bits -

  • Pirates

    David L. Harrison, Dan Burr

    Paperback (WordSong, April 1, 2012)
Everyone thinks a pirate's life is dangerous and thrilling, chosen by those who are willing to trade a few moments of excitement and rich booty for the possibility of getting wounded or killed, or captured and executed. But David L. Harrison's pirate voices depict not the swashbuckling, daring adventurers but rather a bunch of scurvy mates who spent most of their time bored, waiting to plunder the bounty of unsuspecting passing vessels. In 20 poems he lays bare the true stories of what a pirate's life was really like. Dan Burr's realistic, lush paintings show the highs and lows and everything in between for those who swore the oath of the Brotherhood.

This (very!) short story tells the tale of Cap'n, Crazzy Linda, the Archenemy and a dastardly thief. Please note - this book was written by a six-year old. It's a lot of fun but it is only four pages long and comes complete with spelling erorrs. If you're willing to pay for that, then Scarlett hopes you enjoy her book!
