  • Little Fox, Lost

Nicole Snitselaar, Alicia Padron, Erin Woods

Hardcover (Pajama Press, Oct. 14, 2016)
Little Fox’s paw prints make such beautiful pictures in the newly fallen snow. Left here, right there, around that fallen branch―he scatters them throughout the forest until, too late, he finds he can’t retrace his steps back home. Lost and afraid, Little Fox wants to agree when a kind, old owl offers to fly ahead and guide him. But Mama Fox has warned him often: “If ever you are lost, my child, / don’t let a stranger guide you. / Be still and I will search the wild / until I am beside you.”In gentle, expressive text, Nicole Snitselaar spins a tale that goes far beyond a simple “stranger danger” warning. Her Little Fox, equipped with his own ingenuity as well as his mother’s wisdom, cleverly finds a way for the other animals to attract Mama Fox’s attention while keeping himself safe. Alicia Padrón renders this resilient Little Fox and his forest companions in soft watercolors, their rounded shapes and endearing features easing any anxiety that little listeners might feel about being lost.

I live in Spokane, WA. I decided to write this rhyming story in 1990 for a project in a school music program. There have been some revisions here and there but I am hoping you will enjoy it. As a mother with two young daughters who are now also mothers I know how exhausted and frustrated a holiday season can be. Maybe mothers and children alike will gain something from reading this book. Oh, I hope so.

Little Lamb has lost her mother and looks all around the farm to find her. All of the charming Noisy Farm Babies board books will delight toddlers with their softly hued color illustrations, their gentle stories about farm animals, and their plastic pushbuttons that make amusing sounds when pressed. The button for Little Chick emits a gentle “cheep cheep,” the Little Lamb says “baa baa,” the Little Duckling lets out four funny “quacks,” and the Little Bunny goes “sproing,” to suggest that he is hopping around. The little stories will please preschool boys and girls.

Barron's delightful series of Look at Me Books for toddlers continues to grow with more brand-new titles for the Spring 2011 season. Each of these board books tells a story about mother animal, how she cares for her baby, and keeps it out of trouble. The stories have natural appeal for younger boys and girls. This book's color illustrations on every page show a mother sheep and her baby lamb rendered in a naturalistic style and placed in realistic settings. The book is die-cut in the shape of the baby lamb that is shown on the front cover and depicted in the story.
