Isaac Newton Stevens (1858-1920) was an American lawyer, editor and author. In 1884 he became Assistant U. S. District Attorney and in 1888 became District Attorney for the Denver Judicial District. He became editor and manager of the Colorado Springs Gazette in 1899. His works include: The Liberators: A Story of Future American Politics (1908), An American Suffragette (1911) and What is Love? (1918).

Published in 1911 during the height of the women's suffrage movement, this novel reflects many of the social interests and concerns of the time including the fascination with mesmerism, class issues, the effects of poverty on health and, of course, the arguments for and against suffrage. The story revolves around a broken engagement, two burgeoning romances and a murder mystery solved by a feminist woman defense attorney.
