Robert Lovis Stevenson, Jessie Willcox Smith

Paperback (Pook Press, May 27, 2015)
A Child’s Garden of Verses is a book written by Robert Louis Stevenson – it is here accompanied by the splendid illustrations of Jessie Willcox Smith. Stevenson (1850 – 1894), was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist and travel writer, most famous for penning Treasure Island, and the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. His A Child’s Garden of Verses is a collection of poetry, which first appeared in 1885, under the title of Penny Whistles. It contains about 65 poems including the cherished classics ‘Foreign Children’, ‘The Lamplighter’, ‘The Land of Counterpane’, ‘Bed in Summer’, ‘My Shadow’ and ‘The Swing’. Jessie Willcox Smith (1863 – 1935) was one of the most prominent female illustrators in the United States during the Golden Age of American Illustration. She was also a prolific contributor to literary novels and magazines during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Most notable was her ongoing relationship with Good Housekeeping, including the long-running ‘Mother Goose’ series. Smith’s style changed drastically through her life. In the beginning of her career she used dark lined borders to delineate brightly coloured objects, and in later works she masterfully softened lines and colours – until they almost disappeared. Presented alongside the text, her illustrations bring further joy to Robert Louis Stevenson’s poetry. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Paperback (Pook Press, Oct. 7, 2015)
'The Secret Garden' is the timeless story of Mary Lennox, a sickly girl who is left orphaned and alone when an outbreak of cholera kills her parents and the staff of their home in India. She eventually ends up in Yorkshire with her uncle Archibald Craven, and becomes inspired by the curious story of a nearby 'secret garden' she hears from a neighbour. Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel 'The Secret Garden was first published as a serial beginning in 1910, it numbers amongst Burnett's most famous works and is widely considered to be a classic of English children's literature. This edition was originally published in 1912 and is accompanied by Charles Robinson's beautiful illustrations. Charles Robinson (1870-1937) was an active painter in his own right, and brother of the famous Thomas and William Heath Robinson, his illustrations still delight both young and old over a century later. Robinson started his illustrative career with 100 pen and ink drawings for ‘A Child’s Garden of Verses’ (1895). The book was an instant hit, and from that point onward, Robinson continued to illustrate fairy tales and children’s books – with his characteristic style of subtle line, combined with delicate watercolours. Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924) was a seminal American-English playwright and novelist whose notable works include 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' (1885), 'A Little Princess' (1905), and 'The Secret Garden' (1911). Tasha Tudor Robert Louis Stevenson

Hardcover (Prentice Hall (a Pearson Education Company), Sept. 3, 1999)
Scottish novelist, poet and essayist Robert Louis Stevenson dedicated "A Child's Garden of Verses" to Alison Cunningham, the nurse of his early childhood years in Edinburgh--a time whose essence he strove to recapture in the sixty-four poems of this long-treasured collection. Here, in "The Land of Counterpane" and "The Land of Nod, " and in such delightful lyrics as "My Bed Is a Boat, " "Autumn Fires" and "Windy Nights, " are rhymes and images children and their parents have cherished together since "A Child's Garden of Verses" was first published in 1885.Alternately humorous and whimsical, grave and fearful, courageous and determined, the poems touchingly voice the many moods and currents of a child's imaginings. All sixty-four poems are reprinted in this edition in large, easy-to-read type. New illustrations by Thea Kliros capture the magical spirit of this beloved classic of children's literature.
