For centuries, swamps were thought of by many as worthless or harmful places home only to diseases, biting insects, and dangerous animals. In recent times, however, the true value of swamps is being discovered. These wetlands play an important role in buffering coastal areas from storms, preventing damage from floods, and serving as a nursery for young fish and other aquatic creatures. Swamps are also home to a unique plant and animal community specially adapted for living in this watery environment.
