Book 1 of 12 in the Youngbloods Mysteries Series, this pre-teen book has not one, but two mysteries for fourth, fifth and sixth graders to solve. Balam appears to be a boy in a jaguar costume, but when he does things like disappear off the top of the Bearded Man Temple, Andy Jamison wonders if Balam really could be the 200-year-old jaguar king he claims to be. With a hook at the end of each chapter, readers experience wildlife, culture and language while immersed in the Maya culture within the jungle surrounding Chich'en Itza in Mexico. Activity pages further their learning experience along with Maya and Spanish words with pronunciation and definitions. The exciting illustrations are by Cody Sims. Ben Thomas, Director of Programming at the Archeology Institute of America, was the main advisor on this book which contains his comments as well as those of other archeologists and anthropologists.
