  • URBAN DAIRYING IN NORTHERN ETHIOPIA: CHARACTERIZATION AND EVALUATION OF URBAN DAIRY PRODUCTION SYSTEM IN MEKELLE CITY, TIGRAY REGION, ETHIOPIA

    Negussie Gebreselassie

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, Aug. 23, 2010)
Dairy production systems of 165 sample farms were examined to assess socio-economic status of producers, farm management practices and production constraints. Milk quality tests on milk of high grade Holstein type cows were also conducted to determine fat %, TS, SNF content of milk and prevalence of mastitis. The average family size was 6.4 persons per HH and 26.8 % of HHHs were females. The mean cattle herd size was 8.01 with the predominant breed being high-grade cattle. Among the three breeds Holestein type showed best reproductive and produvtive performance while the local ones performed least. Crossbred had respective performance values that lied between the two breeds. Parity and lactation stage significantly affected fat but not TS and SNF content of milk. Prevalence of mastitis differed significantly by parity and lactation stage It was thus, found out that there is a favorable environment for growth of the dairy sector that mainly comprised small producers and High-grade dairy type animals. The sector also contributes great roles in increasing household income of producers and the well being of city dwellers through supplying milk and milk products.

  • Communicative Behaviour and Gender Identity: A Portrait of The Kipsigis in Kenya

    Pamela Chepngetich Mainye

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, Feb. 11, 2010)
Scholars are in agreement that men and women communicate differently and that the use of language in many ways may reflect a person?s age, status and gender.Equally true is the time tested assertion that communication plays a role in the construction of an individual's gender identity. While many scholars have engaged with the concept of communication and Gender, the bulk of these researches have had a western focus. Accordingly, little attention has been given on how similar dynamics occur within post colonial African communities. In an ethnographically rich exposition, this book explores how communication plays a pivotal role in understanding the construction of gender among the Kipsigis, Kalenjins most populous ethnic group.Providing a fresh addition to the study of gender and communication, the book explores both the verbal and non verbal dimensions of communication as observed on a day to day basis among the Kipsigis. This publication is relevant for scholars in the field of gender and communication.Practioners and policy makers in gender related fields will find this work invaluable.
  • Activation tagging in transgenic poplar: Activation tagging in aspen using an inducible two component Ac/Ds-enhancer element system

Fadia El Sherif, Hamdy Kamal, Matthias Fladung

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, Aug. 20, 2010)
We describe the establishment of an activation tagging system in poplar based upon the maize Ac/Ds transposable element system. Transgenic poplar plants were obtained carrying either one or two of the above mentioned constructs ? Following induction of the GIP promoter only a weak transposase signal could be detected in RT- PCR experiments. Mobility of the ATDs activation construct could not be confirmed in the GIP system. ? An Activation Tagging experiment was initiated using eight different double transgenic lines. A few putative variants could be obtained revealing deficiency in chlorophyll content. ? Single transgenic aspen lines carrying HSP- transposase have been produced. Following transformation with HSP-transposase a chimerical transgenic line was obtained revealing white and green plants. Following activation tagging experiment a HSP-transposase/ATDs-rolC double transgenic line, one somaclonal variation line was obtained revealing white plants.
  • Effect of Variety and Pretreatment: On Sweet Potato Fried Chips Quality

    Addisalem Hailu Taye

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, Aug. 4, 2011)
Three sweet potato varieties namely, Bereda, Falaha and Belela with specific gravity1.06, 1.00 and 0.95 and moisture content of 77.32, 74.96 and 77.80% respectively have been studied for their suitability of chips production. Three blanching times (1, 3 and 5 minutes) in hot water at 90°C and two dehydration methods (hot air at 70°C and salt solution) were used in the study to find out the pretreatments, that would give products of acceptablequality.Ground nut oil was used for frying the slices at 160°C. The study shows that variety Bereda resulted in chips with better flavor, crispness, color and overall acceptance, as compared to the other two varieties. Chips produced from all three varieties were found to have flavor acceptance with average scores of 3.61, 3.68 and 3.54 for Belela, Bereda and Falaha, respectively, in which statistically not significant differences existed. Among the three blanching times considered the 5 min duration resulted in chips with a better sensory quality than those of the 3 and 1 min duration.
  • BAKANAE DISEASE OF RICE IN PAKISTAN: A Guide Book on the Management of Bakanae Disease

Muhammad Iqbal, Prof. Dr. Nazir Javed, Arbab Ahmad

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, Jan. 26, 2011)
Rice is being consumed by large population of the world. It is the leading crop in Asia and more than two billion people depend on rice for more than half the carbohydrates and calories. It is an important food and cash crop of Pakistan and Pakistan is famous all over the world for its good taste aromatic rice. But unfortunately, despite of all the advancements in production technologies a considerable portion of the produce is lost to diseases. Many devastating diseases which affect the economics of rice, bakanae disease is one of them. Over the previous few years, the causal agent (Fusarium moniliforme) of bakanae is constantly present in the major rice growing areas (especially in the Punjab Province) of the Pakistan. So, there was a dire need of comprehensive studies on the management of paddy diseases. This guide book provides the scientific methodology and protocol for the management of paddy diseases and a roadmap for the farmers, researchers and students of plant sciences.
  • Nutritional Assessment of Palestinian Adolescents from East Jerusalem: A School-Based Study 2002/2003

    Christine Jildeh

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, Nov. 3, 2010)
To examine the nutritional status and dietary pattern of school aged children in East Jerusalem. This Cross-sectional study is the first comprehensive study ever conducted in East Jerusalem grades 6, 8 and 10. The total sample (351 students), 351 had 24-hour dietary recall and 317 had blood tests and 351 had their weight and height measured. Valid and reliable tools were used to measure the weight, height, hemoglobin level and dietary intake. The sample was collected April 2003 - January 2004. The moderate and mild forms of anaemia was 0.95% and 19% respectively while severe form of anaemia (<7 gm/dl) turned out to be not of public health significance. Underweight (cut off value ?18.5) was 30% for males and 22% for females. Obesity level (cut off value ?30) was 3.3% among males and 4.8% among females. Furthermore, 27% of those with income ? average were underweight. School aged children macronutrient intake was inadequate when compared to < 80% RDA. Students in East Jerusalem are generally suffering from malnutrition especially from underweight. More attention should be focused on the improvement of their dietary intake. • Submerged Thin Plate Weirs with Unequal Beds: An Initial Sttudy

    Guinevere Nalder

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, Sept. 2, 2011)
At the time that the study described in themonograph commenced, all of the published research onsubmerged thin plate weirs assumed that the upstreamand downstream beds were at the same level. Inpractice downstream beds may be eroded by the flowover the weir leading to unequal bed levels.Using laboratory models, this study examined thedischarge over submerged weirs with unequal beds. Theresulting flow pattern was shown to be different tothat of the equal bed case. The approach channelFroude Number differs from that of the equivalentequal bed case. The standard formulas derived forsubmerged equally bedded weirs were shown to giveincorrect values. The existing standard formulas for calculatingdischarge over submerged thin plate weirs treatsubmerged flow as a variation of the free modularflow. The later part of the study treats flow over asubmerged thin plate weir as a separate flowcondition and proposes an initial form of a newdischarge formula.
