Godfreyâs voice dropped to a sudden whisper and he looked at the floorboards and muttered as if for his own ears alone.âLong has this evil afflicted the kingdom, yet none have been brave enough to confront it. Is this now the time of its end, I wonder?âHis eyes looked unseeingly at the wall opposite his stool as if looking at a vision perceptible to his eyes alone. So long was he silent that Abelard cleared his throat to recall him back to their presence. Godfrey looked at him and blinked his eyes. Abelard ventured to address him, and what he mistook as a slip on Godfreyâs part.âA long time, you say? Yet this cloud did not appear over Merdyce until just this morning as the citizens rose from their beds.âGodfrey gazed at him, until his chest heaved suddenly in a deep sigh.âOh, Abelard,â he murmured.âMany shall be the weapons of warfare that come against you,â Godfrey intoned solemnly. âYet, you shall be equipped to overcome them. Everything you need for success lies within you or shall be provided, although you do not yet know it.âWhen evil assails you, know that there is a way to combat it. You shall see what is unseen, hear what is not audible, and speak words you do not know. You shall become aware of what is hidden from knowledge, and have the sudden wisdom to solve whatever problem you face. You shall know good from evil, and discern the presence of either in every place you set your foot. You shall receive power to deliver from evil, and the gift to heal whatever has been afflicted. Even nature shall be subject to your command, and you shall understand the tongues of men and be able to respond in their own language.âBut proceed with caution, for these powers do not belong to you for your own purposes, but must be used for the good of others: they are gifts only and can be taken away as suddenly as they are bestowed. If you attempt to battle evil on your own in your own strength, know that you shall fail, and your mission be aborted. The consequences of that failure shall be grave, and the lives of many impacted and imperiled.âThe merry Kingdom of Merdyce is enchanted under the curse of an evil witch. Only Abelard, the simple farm boy who became a knight in Abelard and the Dragon's Vapor, dares to pursue the witch and force her to break the spell. But the road is filled with surprises, danger, and marvels as he ventures into the perilous realm where few dare to go, and those who do are never the same. From L. M.
