  • Conrad and Company 1: Pupils' Book

Erich Ballinger, Robin Davis, Guenter Gerngross, Roswitha Hladnig, Herbert Puchta

Paperback (Pearson English Language Teaching, Oct. 4, 1993)
"Conrad and Company" is a two-level beginners' course for 6-10 year-olds with an original approach to learning English. Function and activity based, it uses total physical response (TPR), games and songs and visual material as the basis for language learning. The course is illustrated, and features a cast of friendly monster characters. Simple stories are used to teach more language through listening and then acting out and re-telling the stories in oral and written exercies. The stories are constructed within the framework of the course, so language should develop at a natural pace. Pupils are encouraged to work at their own pace. A "silent period" is allowed for, as pupils develop awareness of the language before they are ready to speak. They take part in games and chants, enjoy stories and songs, and can join in more and more as they become confident in the language.

Paperback (Pearson English Language Teaching, Aug. 2, 1993)
Part of a four-stage course taking secondary students from complete beginners to intermediate level. Students are encouraged to work out for themselves how the language functions and to contrast English with their own language. This students' book comprises 48 lessons, in eight blocks, with every sixth lesson being a revision lesson, which also contains reading skills work. The course offers a mix of characters, topics and cartoons, designed to motivate students and involve them in the world of English. There is a cast of characters from a South London school and some lessons are based on people and places from around the world. The course takes an overt approach to grammar, with new language signalled in each lesson. At the same time, students are encouraged to discover for themselves how certain elements of the language work. Students are also given opportunities to discuss their learning in their own language, with their teacher and with other students. Games and puzzles are also featured.

It engages and maintains their interest through lively stories, games, songs, rhymes, drama, projects and craft work - activities that are fun as well as educational. "Popcorn" reflects the varying interests and abilities of learners in the 6-12 age range. The course develops at the same pace as the learners who are using it, both in terms of language and conceptual ability. Levels 4, 5 and 6 (ages 9-12) take pupils into the realms of exploration and adventure. New language is presented through storylines which allow students to use their imagination and learn more about the world around them. Project work is encouraged with regular topic units. The Teacher's Books provide guidance and ready-made lesson plans, a breakdown of language, topics and skills covered at each level, plus ideas for additional ways to exploit the material provided. These can be photocopied and used at the end of each term.
