Following A Morbid Taste For Bones, One Corpse Too Many is the second Chronicle of Brother Cadfael, of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, at Shrewsbury. It is year 1138, and a war rages between Empress Maud, legitimate heir to the throne, and King Stephen, who claims it. Hearts and souls are at unrest, even within the walls of the usually peaceful abbey of Shrewsbury. Everyone seems to take his stand for either Maud or Stephen, a few even deserting monastic life. Cadfael, whose only allegiance is to Godfrey de Bouillon, the king of Jerusalem he served in his adventurous past, prefers to concentrate on gardening, task he has to manage alone, until a new lay servant, Godric, is entrusted to his care. Soon, and as the abbey provides lodging to people who have voluntarily relinquished their possessions to Stephen in sign of good faith, Cadfael realizes that there is something very strange about Godric... Meanwhile, after a long siege, King Stephen and his army successfully invade Shrewsbury, and because he has been accused of being too lenient before, Stephen orders the hanging of the 94 men of arms captured... After the grim execution is completed, Cadfael becomes responsible for giving the men a decent burial. With his sharp eye, he notices that there is one corpse too many, a 95th man who was not part of the execution... Who killed the man and why? This is the question that Cadfael will try to solve along with the mystery of a treasure of interest to many, and all while trying to save the daughter of Fluke Adeney, vassal lord of Shrewsbury. ------------- 6 Audio Cassettes
