While Leo Tolstoy’s novel War and Peace (1863-69) immortalized the Napoleonic campaigns to the eve of the Decembrist revolt, And Quiet Flows the Don showed the destruction of the Cossacks and the birth of a new society.

As vast and turbulent as it is true to history, this novel vividly depicts the loyalties that divided Russia after the fall of the czarist regime and during the Civil War. Sholokhov's unsparing portrayal of the cossack Gregor's conflicting commitments to wife and mistress finds a symbolic extension in the war between the Bolsheviks and the cossacks who by their rage to remain free are forced to oppose the revolution.
