SEA AND SARDINIA by D.H. LAWRENCE A new edition of the travel book that D.H. Lawrence wrote about his journeys in Italy in the 1910s. Sea and Sardinia (1916) is one of Lawrence's lyrical travel works, also seen in Twilight In Italy. From chapter one: Here in Sicily it is so pleasant: the sunny Ionian sea, the changing jewel of Calabria, like a fire-opal moved in the light; Italy and the panorama of Christmas clouds, night with the dog-star laying a long, luminous gleam across the sea, as if baying at us, Orion marching above... D H. 1885-1930 Lawrence, Jan Juta

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

    D.H. Lawrence, Philip Bates

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 28, 2017)
David Herbert LAWRENCE (1885-1930), was born at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, one of five children of a miner and an ex-schoolteacher. He was often ill as a child and grew up in considerable poverty. He attended Nottingham High School for three years, but at 15 was forced to give up his education and take a job for a short time as a clerk in a surgical goods factory and then became a pupil teacher. In 1906, having worked to save the necessary, he took up a scholarship at Nottingham University College to study for a teacher´s certificate. He was already writing poetry and short stories and he now began his first novel “The White Peacock” (1911), which was followed by “The Trespasser” (1912). He taught for two years at an elementary school in Croydon but after the death of his mother he became seriously ill and was advised to give up teaching. His first major novel, “Sons and Lovers” (1913) is a faithful autobiographical account of these early years. His next novel, “The Rainbow” (1915), was seized by the police and declared obscene. At the Villa Mirenda, near Florence, he finished “Lady Chatterley´s Lover” (1928), his last novel and the one that was to cause more furore than any other. He died in Vence on 2 March 1930.
  • Sea and Sardinia

    D. H. Lawrence

Paperback (Independently published, July 19, 2019)
Written after the First World War when he was living in Sicily, Sea and Sardinia records Lawrence’s journey to Sardinia and back in January 1921. It reveals his delighted response to a new landscape and people, and his ability to transmute the spirit of place into literary art. Like his other travel writings, the book is also a shrewd enquiry into the political and social values of an era which saw the rise of communism and fascism. On one level an indictment of contemporary materialism, Sea and Sardinia is nevertheless an optimistic book, celebrating the creativity of the human spirit and seeking in the fundamental laws of human nature fresh inspiration for the present.
