  • Howard Pyle S Book of Pirates

    Howard Pyle

Paperback (Book Jungle, Nov. 12, 2008)
Howard Pyle (1853 - 1911) was an American illustrator and writer of books for children. In 1900 he founded the Brandywine school of art and illustration. He is best known for his classic The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood and a 4 volume work on King Arthur. Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates; Fiction, Fact & Fancy concerning the Buccaneers & marooners of the Spanish Main was written for children. Pyle has a gift for making his characters spring from the page as real flesh and blood people. Pyle begins with the lure of the pirate life, which lurks beneath the surface of many a respectable person. "WHY is it that a little spice of deviltry lends not an unpleasantly titillating twang to the great mass of respectable flour that goes to make up the pudding of our modern civilization? And pertinent to this question another--Why is it that the pirate has, and always has had, a certain lurid glamour of the heroical enveloping him round about? Is there, deep under the accumulated debris of culture, a hidden groundwork of the old-time savage? Is there even in these well-regulated times an unsubdued nature in the respectable mental household of every one of us that still kicks against the pricks of law and order? To make my meaning more clear, would not every boy, for instance--that is, every boy of any account--rather be a pirate captain than a Member of Parliament?"

  • Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates

    Howard Pyle

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Jan. 13, 2011)
In HOWARD PYLE'S BOOK OF PIRATES the pirates, buccaneers, and marooners who once infested the Spanish Main, are cruel but picturesque sea wolves. They are remembered in part because of the pen and pencil of Howard Pyle. The book is a collection of stories and illustrations originally published in periodicals during his lifetime. Accounts of the deeds of pirates are told of Henry Morgan, l'Olonoise, Captain Avary, one of the first to use marooning of prisoners, Robert Kidd, Edward Teach, or "Blackbeard," Ned Low, William Brand, Captain Malyloe, Barnaby True, Tom Chist, Jack Ballister, Blueskin, John Scarfield, and Robertson Keitt as well as tales of buried treasure and the ruby of Kishmoor.
  • Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates: Fact And Fancy Concerning the Buccaneers And Marooners of the Spanish Main

Howard Pyle, Merle Johnson, Simon Vance

MP3 CD (Blackstone Audio Inc, Jan. 1, 2006)
"Pirates, Buccaneers, Marooners, those cruel but picturesque sea wolves who once infested the Spanish Main, all live in present-day conceptions in great degree as drawn by the pen and pencil of Howard Pyle...It is improbable that anyone else will ever bring his combination of interest and talent to the depiction of these old-time Pirates, any more than there could be a second Remington to paint the now extinct Indians and gun-fighters of the Great West." So writes Merle Johnson, who has here gathered together in one volume all of the nineteenth-century author-artist's classic pirate stories that had been scattered through many magazines and books. Well-researched and with richly drawn characters, Pyle's work will appeal to students of history and adventure lovers alike.
