  • The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

    Washington Irving, Robertson Dean

Audio CD (Dreamscape Media, Sept. 9, 2014)
The most beloved and oft-adapted work by Washington Irving, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow follows a love triangle in the New York countryside in 1790. Sleepy Hollow, a supposedly haunted glen on the outskirts of Tarry Town, is home to a particularly ghoulish fiend - the Headless Horseman - who is said to be the specter of a fallen soldier. Ichabod Crane, a schoolmaster from Connecticut, competes with local hero Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt for the affections of the young, beautiful, and wealthy Katrina Van Tassel. Crane, considered an outsider by the community, takes part in an annual harvest party in a bid to win Katrina’s hand in marriage. His scheme fails, however, and Crane has a run-in with Sleepy Hollow’s most infamous resident.

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - In the bosom of one of those spacious coves which indent the eastern shore of the Hudson, at that broad expansion of the river denominated by the ancient Dutch navigators the Tappan Zee, and where they always prudently shortened sail and implored the protection of St. Nicholas when they crossed, there lies a small market town or rural port, which by some is called Greensburgh, but which is more generally and properly known by the name of Tarry Town. This name was given, we are told, in former days, by the good housewives of the adjacent country, from the inveterate propensity of their husbands to linger about the village tavern on market days. Be that as it may, I do not vouch for the fact, but merely advert to it, for the sake of being precise and authentic. Not far from this village, perhaps about two miles, there is a little valley or rather lap of land among high hills, which is one of the quietest places in the whole world. A small brook glides through it, with just murmur enough to lull one to repose; and the occasional whistle of a quail or tapping of a woodpecker is almost the only sound that ever breaks in upon the uniform tranquillity.

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, Feb. 19, 2014)
About the Book Fairy tales, wonder tales, magic tales are a folklore genre taking the form of a short story that typically includes magical beings such as dragons, elves, fairies, giants, gnomes, goblins, griffins, mermaids, talking animals, trolls, unicorns, or witches. Generally, magic or enchantments are involved. Fairy tales are distinguished from legends, are mainly derived from European tradition and folk lore, and are generally children's literature. Mythology has a broader and older pedigree than fairy tales, dating back to ancient times in a number of European, African, Middle Eastern and Asian civilizations. Best known among these to Western audiences are Ancient Greek and Old Norse myths and legends. Generally, these myths and legends describe epic quests, journeys and interactions between human adventurers or heroes and god-like deities. Also in this Book Collections of Ancient, Classical & Medieval literature are anthologies that have been compiled in order to demonstrate the works of a number of ancient, classical or medieval authors. Also in this Book Titles that are fiction anthologies are collections of fiction works chosen by the compiler. They may be a collection of stories by different authors.
