    Artist Francis B. Carpenter came to the White House in 1864 to create a painting to commemorate the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. He spent several months set up in the state dining room paintng and observing Lincoln at work and listening to the many anecdotes and recitations Lincoln was famous for.
