David Herbert Lawrence (September 11, 1985 – March 2, 1930) was an English writer. Much of Lawrence’s work was based off his family life, which featured tension between his father, a coal mine worker, and his mother who was a schoolmistress.Lawrence’s opinions as well as the sexual content of some of his works made him a lot of enemies in his homeland and some of his novels were banned for many years. Lawrence and his wife left England after World War I and mostly traveled until Lawrence became ill and the couple finally settled in Florence, Italy. Lawrence’s best known works are Sons and Lovers, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

    Paperback (IndoEuropeanPublishing.com, Feb. 27, 2012)
The White Peacock is a novel by D. H. Lawrence published in 1911. Lawrence started the novel in 1906 and then rewrote it three times. The early versions had the working title of Laetitia. Lawrence's first novel is set in the Eastwood area of his youth and is narrated in the first person by a character named Cyril Beardsall. It involves themes such as the damage associated with mismatched marriages, and the border country between town and country. A misanthropic gamekeeper makes an appearance, in some ways the prototype of Mellors in Lawrence's last novel, Lady Chatterley's Lover. The book includes some notable description of nature and the impact of industrialisation on the countryside and the town. Its provincialism may be compared with the novels of George Eliot and Thomas Hardy. (wikipedia.org) Review by Barbara Unkovic: I thoroughly enjoyed The White Peacock. I am probably biased as I am DH Lawrence's cousin. My mother is a Beardsall. I found the book to be very descriptive and it was easy to visualise the settings and the characters. It is much softer than his later work and a great introduction to his writing. I highly recommend it, especially for first time readers of this author.

David Herbert Richards Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English writer of the 20th century, whose prolific and diverse output included novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel books, translations, literary criticism, and personal letters. His collected works represent an extended reflection upon the dehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialisation. In them, Lawrence confronts issues relating to emotional health and vitality, spontaneity, sexuality, and human instinct. Lawrence's opinions earned him many enemies and he endured official persecution, censorship, and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile he called his "savage pilgrimage". E. M. Forster, in an obituary notice, challenged this widely held view, describing him as "the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation". Lawrence is perhaps best known for his novels Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, and Lady Chatterley's Lover. Within these he explores the possibilities for life and living within an Industrial setting. His other works include: The White Peacock (1911), The Widowing of Mrs Holroyd (1914), The Lost Girl (1920), St. Mawr (1925), The Man Who Died (1931) and The Fight for Barbara (1933).
