Stranger in a Strange Land : V-2056 -
Robert A. Heinlein
Paperback
(Avon, March 15, 1966)
Science fiction Grand Master Robert A. Heinlein's story of a human visitor from Mars became a cult classic. If you look at print dictionaries from the 1970s, you will often find the word "Grok", which is a Martian term from the book meaning approximately to understand so thoroughly that the observer becomes a part of the observed-to merge, blend, intermarry, lose identity in group experience. Stranger in a Strange Land tells the story of Valentine Michael Smith, who comes to earth as a young man born on Mars and raised by Martians. He experiences earth culture through Martian eyes, and imparts some of Martian culture to the earth. The 1961 book won the Hugo for best science fiction novel in 1961. Avon produced the first printing of the first paperback edition. Published by Avon in June 1962, New York, Avon Number V-2056, cover art by Neil Boyle, cover price 75. This would have been the edition widely read by science fiction fans in the early 1960s.
