  • The Art of War

    Sun Tzu, Lionel Giles

    eBook (Digireads.com Publishing, May 29, 2016)
Although there are many classic treatises on the subject, it may be said that no greater work on the subject of military theory exists than Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War.” It is certainly one of the oldest known books on the subject having been written some 2500 years ago. Sun Tzu, a Chinese general, military strategist, and philosopher lived in the second half of the 6th century BC and considered war as a necessary evil that if possible is better to be avoided. In his work, Sun Tzu focused heavily on the strategic planning leading up to warfare, the positioning of military assets, and the economic constraints that define the conflict. Because of this, the lessons of “The Art of War,” have routinely drawn comparisons to the challenges present in other disciplines, including business, politics, and litigation. Sun Tzu’s work has been studied for centuries and the wisdom contained within it continues to be applicable to this day. This edition is translated with commentary and an introduction by Lionel Giles and is printed on premium acid-free paper.

  • SUN TZU ON THE ART OF WAR

    Sun Tzu, Lionel Giles

eBook (Ancient Wisdom Publications, Jan. 28, 2011)
Sun Tzu was an ancient Chinese military general, strategist and philosopher who is traditionally believed and most likely to have authored The Art of War, an influential ancient Chinese book on military strategy. Sun Tzu has had a significant impact on Chinese and Asian history and culture, both as an author of The Art of War and through legend. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Sun Tzu's The Art of War grew in popularity and saw practical use in Western society, and his work has continued to influence both Asian and Western culture and politics. Sun Tzu's The Art of War has influenced many notable figures. Traditional histories recount that the first emperor of a unified China, Qin Shi Huang, considered the book invaluable in ending the Age of Warring States. The Art of War was introduced in Japan c. AD 760, and the book quickly became popular among Japanese generals. The work also significantly influenced the unification of Japan. Mastery of its teachings was honored among the samurai, and its teachings were both exhorted and exemplified by influential daimyo and shoguns, as this statue in Japan depicts his likeness. Historians popularly recount how French emperor Napoleon studied Sun's military writings and used them to successfully wage war against the rest of Europe. The emperor's disregard for central principles such as attentiveness to temporal conditions is largely credited for his eventual defeat in Russia. Admiral of the Fleet Togo Heihachiro, who led Japan's forces to victory against Russia in the Russo-Japanese War, was an avid reader of The Art of War.
