McLaughlin spent her childhood living in an Indian community and after her marriage to an Indian agent she lived on several reservations. She spoke the Sioux language fluently and spent much time hearing and writing down the myths of these people. The myths will give insight into the mentality of the Sioux race and will also delight any child who hears the stories.
