Cobb is remembered best for his humorous stories of Kentucky and is part of the American literary regionalism school. These stories were collected first in the book Old Judge Priest (1915), whose title character was based on a prominent West Kentucky judge named William Pitman Bishop. Writer Joel Harris wrote of these tales, "Cobb created a South peopled with honorable citizens, charming eccentrics, and loyal, subservient blacks, but at their best the Judge Priest stories are dramatic and compelling, using a wealth of precisely rendered detail to evoke a powerful mood."Among his other books are the humorous Speaking of Operations (1916), and anti-prohibition ode to bourbon, Red Likker (1929).

For convenience in arrangement, a few of these papers have been broken up into sectional sub divisions with new chapter headings inserted otherwise the matter is here presented practic ally in its original form.It has been given to the writer to behold widely dissimilar aspects of the Great War. As a neutral observer, hailing from a neutral country, I was a witness, in Belgium, in north ern France, in Germany and in England, to some of its first stages. That was back in 1914, when I was for awhile with the British, then for a period with the Belgian forces afield, then for a much longer period with the German armies and finally with the British again. I was of like mind then with all my professional brethren serv ing publications m non-belligerent countries, ex cepting one or two or three of a more discerning vision than the rest. Cobb (1876-1944) was an American author, humorist, editor and columnist from Paducah, Kentucky who relocated to New York in 1904 where he lived for the rest of his life. He wrote for the New York World, Joseph Pulitzer's newspaper, as the highest paid staff reporter in the USA. He was the author of more than 60 books and 300 short stories, with some of his works being adapted for the screen. Cobb covered the First World War from 1914 for the Saturday Evening Post travelling throughout Belgium, France, Germany and Britain as a neutral observer and spending time with the Belgian forces, and both the British and German armies. In 1915 he published a book about his experiences, Paths of Glory. He returned to France when America joined the war, continuing to write for the Post and in 1918 published this second book in which his later Post articles are collected. It is notable for bringing to the public's attention the courage shown by black American soldiers fighting in Europe.
