  • Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz

    L. Frank Baum

    eBook (, May 6, 2020)
In this novel, Dorothy visits her Uncle Henry in his California ranch. She, her friends, her cousins and a few pets are traveling in a buggy when the earth suddenly splits open and the entire lot falls into the crack. From here on, a series of adventures follows, with the children having bizarre encounters in the Land of the Mangaboos which is inhabited by the Vegetable People. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz suddenly makes his appearance and together, they all travel onto further amazing countries. Princess Ozma appears to rescue Dorothy and her companions as they meet one disaster after another.Though Lyman Frank Baum wrote more than 50 novels, many short stories and hundreds of poems, he is today known almost exclusively as the author of the Oz stories. Born into immense wealth and privilege, he however, led an unhappy childhood as a sickly and weak youngster. His wealthy father purchased a small printing press to keep him occupied with writing, and young Frank and his brothers produced a home newspaper to entertain the family. This early enterprise provided the germ of a writing career that, however, earned critical and financial acclaim only when Frank was more than forty years of age. The first of the Oz books, written after a failed career in theater, was published in 1900. It was hugely successful and L. Frank Baum went on to write thirteen more in the series. Though he tried to abandon the series several times out of sheer boredom, the flood of letters from children clamoring for more, publisher's demands and the disaster that his other books met with compelled him to continue.

  • Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz

    L. Frank Baum, John R. Neill, Eltanin Publishing

eBook (Eltanin Publishing, Nov. 15, 2011)
~~ includes all the original illustrations (over 70) by John R. Neill, many of them in color, and a new Preface by Oz expert and Eltanin Editor Joseph Nusbaum. ~~~~ From the Editor's Preface:It took eight years for the Wonderful Wizard to make his way back to Oz in 1908. The return was all but inevitable. In Baum’s introduction to Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, he is clearly resigned to delivering what thousands of children had been clamoring for: “Oz — Oz! More about Oz, Mr. Baum!” In the two installments in the Oz series that bridged Wonderful Wizard to this volume, Baum earnestly worked to expand the scope of his fairy-tellings beyond the confines of his first Oz book. The Land of Oz had a host of new characters whose adventures explored expansive themes in gender roles and self-determination. Indeed, Baum only brought Dorothy back in Ozma of Oz amidst another new cast of characters and set the action predominantly in the neighboring country of Ev.But in Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, Baum recognizes that his readers have a deep-seated love for Oz and long for a reunion of Dorothy with the eponymous humbug wizard from the original story. The result is one of the most light-hearted adventures in the entire Oz series. Baum seems to simply allow himself to have fun in crafting this adventure, and though there are many dark and frightening trials facing Dorothy and her companions, the story is delivered without the weighty themes and heavy consequences of the prior three books....Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz is the 4th book in L. Frank Baum's Oz series. The following Oz books are also available from Eltanin Publishing. • Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz: Illustrated, 1908

    Frank L. Baum

    eBook (, Aug. 23, 2016)
Published by Reilly & Britton in 1908 and illustrated by John R. Neill, Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz was Baum’s fourth Oz book and one of his most exciting. In the narrative, Dorothy Gale is on her way to see Uncle Henry in California at Hugson’s Ranch. She joins her cousin Zeb for a ride in a buggy drawn by a horse named Jim. An earthquake opens a crevice which they fall through, ending up in the land of the Mangaboos, strange vegetable people who blame Dorothy and Zeb for damaging their glass dwellings. Jim and Dorothy’s cat, Eureka, are able to talk and so Dorothy knows that once again she is in a fairyland. While there, a balloon falls from the sky, and Dorothy meets her old friend the humbug Wizard of Oz. Escaping the Mangaboos, the companions travel through the beautiful Valley of Voe, which features invisible people and marauding bears, meet the “Braided Man” in Pyramid Mountain, and fight the hideous, winged, wooden Gargoyles. After a few further adventures, Dorothy uses the magic belt she’d captured from the Nome King, and they arrive at the Emerald City, where, among other happenings, Jim the cab-horse races the Sawhorse and Eureka the cat undergoes a trial for apparently eating one of the Wizard’s nine tiny piglets.
  • Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz

    L. Frank Baum

    eBook (Digireads.com, March 30, 2004)
The fourth book in Baum's Oz series, Dorothy returns to lands of magic and fantasy with her cousin Zeb, kitten Eureka, and a cab-horse named Jim. They encounter vegetable people living under the world, and Dorothy is reunited with the Wizard of Oz when he floats down in his hot air balloon. They later are aided by invisible people in the Valley of Voe, and must escape several unfriendly mythical creatures to return to Oz. Baum's vivid imagination and creativity are readily apparent in this adventurous work, for he combines wonderful characters with an entertaining plot in a land at once familiar and full of enigmatic possibility.

  • Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz

    L. Frank Baum, John R. Neill

Paperback (Dover Publications, Oct. 1, 1984)
At the turn of the twentieth century, a former traveling salesman, journalist, playwright, and actor named Lyman Frank Baum published a novel for children. Overnight, he became famous and his book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, became the classic American fairy tale. By popular demand, a host of delightful sequels followed, some even better than the book that started it all.Dorothy and the Wizard are back in this sequel, and this time it all begins not with a cyclone but with a California earthquake. With her friends Zeb the farm boy, Eureka the kitten, and Jim the cab-horse, Dorothy plummets through a huge crack in the center of the earth. Later they are joined by the Wizard, carrying nine tiny piglets (each no bigger than a mouse). In one thrilling adventure after another, they pass through lands as fantastic as dreams, are stunned by incredible wonders, and make many a narrow escape from danger. In the Land of the Mangaboos, people are vegetables, and the houses, made of glass, are grown, not built! Eating a marvelous fruit in the Valley of Voe makes the inhabitants — including ferocious bears — invisible. And in the deathly silent land of the flying gargoyles, everything is made of wood. The best treat of all comes when the intrepid travelers come back to the magical Land of Oz, where they are greeted by our old friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, and other familiar, strange, and amusing characters. Unexpected complications arise when Jim the cab-horse enters a race against a horse made of wood and when Eureka the kitten is accused of having eaten one of the piglets. Of course all comes right in the end, but not before the author's wonderful imagination, playful wit, and warm humor have touched our hearts and made us laugh, demonstrating once again why L. Frank Baum has been called "The American Lewis Carroll."Reprinted here complete with all the enchanting original drawings by John R. Neill, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz will remain a perennial favorite of the young and all wayfarers in the realm of the imagination.
