Depuis quelques années, l’auteur de Waverley s’occupait, à diverses reprises, de revoir et de corriger la volumineuse série de romans mis au jour sous ce nom, afin que, si ces productions étaient jamais publiquement reconnues par lui, il pût, en quelque sorte, les rendre dignes de la faveur dont on n’a cessé de les honorer depuis leur première apparition. Toutefois l’auteur put croire pendant long-temps que l’édition perfectionnée et annotée qu’il méditait serait une publication posthume. Mais le concours des événements qui ont amené la découverte du nom de l’auteur, lui ayant rendu le droit d’une sorte de critique paternelle sur ses propres ouvrages, il se trouve tout naturellement porté à ne les livrer à la presse que revus et même corrigés, puisque la vie et la santé dont il jouit lui permettent de les examiner de nouveau, et de les revêtir de tous les éclaircissements nécessaires. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself.
