Burning Daylight is a gripping adventure novel by Jack London, published in 1910, which was one of the best-selling books of that year[1] and it was London's best-selling book in his lifetime. The novel takes place in the Yukon Territory in 1893. The main character, nicknamed "Burning Daylight" was the most successful entrepreneur of the Alaskan Gold Rush. The story of the main character was partially based upon the life of Oakland entrepreneur "Borax" Smith.[2] The novel was subsequently filmed as a First National movie starring Milton Sills with Doris Kenyon. The novel was adapted for American films in 1914, 1920, 1928, and 2010. The 2010 film version was produced and directed by Sanzhar Sultanov. This version concentrated on the second half of the book, when the character goes to New York and plays on Wall Street.[3] The title character, Burning Daylight, was played by Robert Knepper. The film held its first public screening on August 9, 2010 in Jack London's hometown of Sonoma, California.[4] The film went on to be released theatrically and is available on DVD. Burning Daylight tells the story of an adventurer who went to Alaska and laid the foundations of his fortune before the gold hunters arrived. Bringing his fortunes to the States he is cheated out of it by a crowd of money kings, and recovers it only at the muzzle of his gun.

The roulette-ball was not even spinning, and the gamekeeper stood by the roaring, red-hot stove, talking with the young, dark-eyed woman, comely of face and figure, who was known from Juneau to Fort Yukon as the Virgin. Three men sat in at stud-poker, but they played with small chips and without enthusiasm, while there were no onlookers. On the floor of the dancing-room, which opened out at the rear, three couples were waltzing drearily to the strains of a violin and a piano.

The miners were in from Moseyed Creek and the other diggings to the west, the summer washing had been good, and the men's pouches were heavy with dust and nuggets. No work was done in the winter, and they made a practice of hibernating in the large camps like Circle City during the long Arctic night. Time was heavy on their hands, their pouches were well filled, and the only social diversion to be found was in the saloons. Yet the Shovel was practically deserted, and the Virgin, standing by the stove, yawned with uncovered mouth and said to Charley Bates:— "If something don't happen soon, I'm gin' to bed. "Burning Daylight" was Jack London's best selling book during his lifetime, yet amazingly since his death, the book has been totally neglected except for an occassional reprint, and currently it is again out of print. The book begins as a two-fisted macho adventure on the Klondike, as the hero --nicknamed Burning Daylight -- becomes the most successful entrepreneur during the Alaskan Gold Rush. However, after acheiving his fame and fortune, he finds no more challenge in the north and heads to the States for new worlds to conquer. But, first he is flim-flammed out of his fortune by Wall Streeters. However, he learns the lesson of dog-eat-dog and becomes as much of a scoundrel as those who robbed him. He ventures to California and envisons the future success of Oakland, buys property, sets up utilities and public transportation systems through overbearing and shady tactics. He begins to drink, starts to go soft in the belly, loses his good looks and vitality. And then, for the first time, he falls in love. The last third of the book charmingly relates how a good woman turns a now bad man around. It is a love story. A rousing adventure. A trieste on the ills of big business. All superbly written by Jack London. It's easy to see why this book was so popular in London's day. If you can find it, read it. It will be time well spent.
