Those 200 acres of Mississippi cotton land, bought by her Grandfather in 1887, were more precious than gold, and as gragile as freedom. But it is 1933 now, and times are hard. To pay off the yearly land taxes, Cassie's father has gone north to work on the railroad, while at home Cassie's Mama teaches school and tends to the farm. Casie and her brothers make do with patches and hand-me-downs, but they take comfort in the thought that come what may, they will always have the land. That year, 1933, will be one Cassie wil never forget. Night riders will come bearing torches and their special brand of hatred, a white girl will try to steal Cassie's dignity, and the farm will almost fall into the hands of the creditors.
