Excerptpossible, in order to prolong the pleasure. Finding that there would be a wait of nearly half an hour, Joyce persuaded her mother to go back to the rear platform of the observation-car, and sit out awhile, in the fresh air. Although the sun was down, it was so warm that Mrs. Ware scarcely needed the shawl Joyce drew around her shoulders."I can't believe that this is the last day of December," she said to Mary, as Joyce hurried into the station to make some inquiry of the ticket-agent. "The last day of the old year," she added. "These electric-lights and the band playing over there in the park, and all the passengers promenading up and down in front of the station, bareheaded, make it seem like a summer resort."Mary peered after the promenading passengers wistfully. The boys had disappeared to watch the engine take water, and there was no one for her to walk with. Just then, Phil and Elsie Tremont, sauntering along, caught sight of her wistful little face.

The story is focused on the Ware family, who, after their father died, and their mother’s sickness, moved from Kentucky to Arizona. Joyce, one of the characters in The Little Colonel, took the responsibility to support her own family. She experiences hardships in her family’s present situation, and she feels sad and fears that her wishes and aspirations will never be sought. When she knew a story at Lee’s Ranch who tells her the “Legend of Camelback Mountain”, and the “Lessons of the Bees”, she started to wish and hope again. When she read a letter to Lloyd who is referred as the Little Colonel, she went to the Ware’s at their home and stayed there for a month. She meets a good looking and admirable Phil Tremont whom she adores so much, and thinks that he might be the one for her. But Phil has his own concerns and preoccupied on how to learn the “Legend of Alaka and the Lost Turquoises”. Little Mary Ware, another important character in the story, loves to talk, funny and very amusing. She plays an important role in the later stories. The Little Colonel in Arizona has 16 chapters, to name, Mary tells all she knows, a Robinson Crusoe of the Desert, a day at school, Ware’s Wigwam, what a letter brought about, wash-day and Washington, a surprise, in the dessert of waiting, Lloyd’s duck hunt, the school of the bees, the new boarder at Lee’s ranch, Phil has a finger in the pie, a change of fortune, the lost turquoises, lost on the desert , and back 10 Dixie. Annie Fellows Johnston, born in Indiana, was an American author of children’s books who wrote the famous series, The Little Colonel, which was the ground work of the Shirley Temple movie, The Little Colonel.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
